Baseball is America's sport. It brings out the boys of summer. While it has had its ups and downs, it has never left us. It is part of the American family, like a brother that sometimes is the hero, sometimes the villain, often embraced, sometimes annoying but never ever turned away. Our children take baseball instruction and baseball hitting drills. We are devoted. Throughout baseballs short history there have been many memorable moments. Here is a quick accounting of a few of those moments brought to you by the heavy hitters.

It was February 2 in 1876, when eight teams became founding members of the National Baseball league. The first National League game was officially played on April 1st, 1876. Boston played Philadelphia and won. On February 2, 1900 the American league was born. It was made up of six teams including: Boston, Baltimore, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Chicago. In April of 1923 Babe Ruth hits his first home run. It was the first home run in Yankee Stadium. Eight years later on August 21st of 1931 Babe Ruth hits his 600th home run.

On May 15th, 1941 the amazing hitting streak of Joe DiMaggio begins. He would hit in 56 consecutive games. In September of that same year Ted Williams would finish the season with a batting average of .406, making him the only batter to ever hit over .400 for a season. In 1961 Roger Maris sends 61 balls over the fence giving him the record for most home runs in a season. Mark McGwire hits 62 in 1998. Sammy Sosa hits his 61st and 62nd home run five days later on September 13, 1998. Barry Bonds will break the record with 73 home runs in 2001.

In 1974, on April 8th, Hank Aaron smacks the ball out of the park and hits his 715th home run, bettering Babe Ruth and moving into the front position on the list of career home runs. He will have 755 before he lays down his bat in 1976. A year latter, Sadaharu Oh sends a ball out of the park in Japan. It is his 756th home run. On October 8th, 1977 Reggie Jackson, Mr. October, hits three home runs. He hits them on three consecutive pitches and leads the Yankees to their 21st world series championship.

On September 11th 1985, Mr. Hustle, Pete Rose hits his 4,192 hit beating out Ty Cobb. Four year later he would be banned from baseball for his gambling offenses. He finished his career with 4,256 hits. These are all players that knew how to swing a bat. There are many other famous players that were great at the plate and in the field. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Lou Gehris, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Duke Snider, Roberto Clemente and many more brought excitement to the game of Baseball. While the 50's and 60'a may have been the golden years of baseball, it is still dear to America's heart. Basketball, football and NASCAR may have grabbed some of the spotlight, but nothing will ever touch these great moments in baseball history.

Life as a Little League or Pony League catcher can be tough. You can read baseball tips on this, baseball tips on that, do drill for this and train for that. Listen to this person, listen to that person. Try this and try that.

But still, you find yourself not throwing many people out in games. It seems like there are always balls getting by you and going back to the backstop. You may have gotten whacked way more times than you'd like by wild pitches. Long games and hot games. Is catching really worth it?

Well, fear not young catchers! Here are a few baseball tips and advice for you on why you should hang in there if you really like catching.

Right now at your age in Little League or Pony League there are things going on that you really have no control over. This makes catching seem impossible at times. It can be discouraging to young catchers because at this age and in these leagues success doesn't come often. You're not throwing a lot of people out, balls are flying everywhere (and hitting you) and you many times feel like you're the catcher only because no one else is stupid enough to do it. Well, those things may be true right now, but here are some things to consider:

• In Little League and Pony League the bases are pretty short. When someone takes off, you're relying on a good pitch from the pitcher, a perfect throw from you and a perfect catch and tag from the second baseman or shortstop. These things don't happen routinely in Little League and are just getting better in Pony League.
• Kids are bigger, stronger and faster these days. Look at the Little League World Series this year. They moved the fence back a good distance because the home runs keep increasing and there are just too many. (yes, those high tech bats played a role too!) My point is, the bases are short and there are a lot of fast runners. This is not a good combination for throwing runners out.
• Many young pitchers at these ages throw a lot of balls and wild pitches. You need good pitches to have any chance at all of throwing someone out. Wild pitches and runners advancing easily can be discouraging You can catch, but you can't pitch and catch. So you are at the mercy of the pitcher too.
• Young pitchers don't always know how to hold runners well or perform good pick-off moves to keep runners honest. Watch a Pony League game sometime. Smart runners will be more than half way down to second base by the time the catcher gets the ball. There's nothing you can do here. Just do your best.

So if you are a young catcher and get a little bit discouraged from time to time, remember these baseball tips and keep your head up.

You can't control the pitched ball. It's going to go where it's going to go. What you need to do is become very, very good at blocking the ball. So what if you don't pop up and throw the runner out. That time will come. Just focus on becoming a technically good blocking catcher. This will always make you stand out from other catchers and this becomes even more true as you get older.

Throwing runners out? If it happens, great! But, what you want to do is develop fast, correct footwork instead of worrying too much about how many people you throw out. Learn correct footwork and practice it over and over and develop a technically correct delivery to second base. Wait and see what happens once the bases become 90 feet apart. You'll be amazed.

Work on other things like:

• Handling bunts, or choppers in front of the plate
• Footwork to block home plate on throws from the outfield. Again, the Little League World Series had great plays at home this year.
• Handling passed balls

Also, and very important, work on that thing sitting on top of your shoulders! Be confident, know that you are a good catcher and believe in yourself and your ability.

When those bases become 90 feet apart, the whole game changes for catchers. If you really worked on being technically good, fast feet and good delivery, you'll throw a lot of people out because now your pitchers and fielders are also much better.

Block everything. People will notice you for this. This will separate you from other catchers. This is true right into High School. Lazy catchers who won't block balls will sit at that point, regardless of their arm strength.

Consider these baseball tips that you've just read young catchers. Stick with it. It will pay off and catching will become a lot more fun once the bases are 90 feet. Just be ready and prepared with your skills when this time comes. And when it does, those same kids that might have thought you were stupid for catching years ago will look to you for the big play, the bases loaded block of a wild pitch, or the big throw that turns the game around. This is when you'll realize that it was all worth it...being a catcher. The BEST position to play!

It came as absolutely no surprise to me that so-called financial guru Wade Cook and his wife Laura were recently convicted of income tax evasion and sentenced to jail, according to an Associated Press report.

Wade Cook became really annoying some years ago by seeking to peddle his financial advice on his theory and accompanying books, tapes, seminars and associated crap to me and a lot of other unsuspecting potential investors.

Crap is the right choice of word as his financial advice has proven worthless. I never bought his stuff but thousands of other investors did.

Cook was nothing more or less than a cab driver who decided to get rich by preying on people looking for an easy solution to becoming rich.

He wrote three get-rich-quick books on his "meter-drop" theory of investing: Wall Street Money Machine, Wealth 101 and Business by the Bible. Is it not amazing how hucksters always want God to endorse their business, products and shenanigans?

Cook conducted hundreds of seminars in the 1990s on asset protection, stock market investing, real estate acquisition and avoidance of income tax.

He was so good at the avoidance of income tax issue that he will now spend more than 7 years in prison for income tax evasion by defrauding the Internal Revenue Service.

U. S. District Judge Thomas Zilly of the federal court in Seattle ordered Cook to pay $3.75 million in back taxes on roughly $9.5 million of underreported income generated by sales of Cook's financial advice books, tapes and seminars.

It is one thing to render a financial judgment and another to collect it. It was not reported whether Cook ponied up the $3.75 million.

I do not know if Cook is penniless today, filed for personal bankruptcy, buried what money he had, placed his stash in a Swiss bank account or has millions in a petty cash account to pay his $3.75 million judgment for tax evasion.

I do know that he and his wife are dishonest, not to be trusted, will knowingly lie, cheat and steal to get ahead in this world, and know little about any kind of investing worth talking about. I knew all of that in the early 1990s when they started.

They apparently made millions selling their story to unsuspecting buyers and then not paying taxes on some of their revenue. Some pundits estimated Cook's net worth at more than $200 million when he was flying high.

He was convicted in February 2007 for tax evasion, filing false returns and obstructing justice. The jury was deadlocked on all counts against his wife Laura who kept his books.

In May 2007 she pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice rather than face a new trial. She was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison. Laura Cook admitted that she created documents to evade taxes on income she and her husband received between 1998 and 2000.

The Associated Press reported that the Cooks said that they had loaned themselves money from a trust that was supposed to become a gift to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Government lawyers said that the couple never intended to repay the money, thus it was taxable income rather than loans.

Cook's lawyers argued that they were unable to repay the loans mostly because of the stock market collapse in 2001. Cook was apparently such a brilliant financial guru that he lost his fortune in a stock market collapse.

So much for Wade Cook's theories on investing for profit and becoming rich in the process.

Cook shut down his operations in February 2003, a month after his publicly traded company-Wade Cook Financial Corporation of Tukwila (WA)-sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Wade Cook and his wife Laura are only one of hundreds of hucksters who have traveled the country selling their crap (get-rich books, tapes and seminars) to unsuspecting investors.

in this case please try e bay. it is a buyers market. sellers are so desperate money orders are acceptable. just inquire from seller prior to purchasing. it is just insane how this market has hit rock bottom and then some. shop dealers no good. prices to high. each card starts at 99 cents. to 1.10. you could also purchase a visa mastercard in ten dololar denomination. buy like crazy.

I think it's a fair comparison.

Both managers have proven that they can win when given great teams. For Torre, it's been the $200 million Yankees loaded with stars for the past decade. For Mack, it was guys like Home Run Baker, Eddie Collins, Eddie Plank and Chief Bender, then studs like Mickey Cochrane and Jimmie Foxx.

Both have proven that, given a crappy team, they can also lose. Mack has a career losing record because of the seasons that the A's would inevitably suffer whenever they sold off their players. Joe Torre had a losing record in his pre-Yankee career because he, too, wasn't working with his current group of Yankee superstars.

I don't think either is a bad manager, but I think that they both point towards the fact that a manager can only do so much, and that it comes down to the players on the field.

I don't really care whether we win or lose, but it's always nicer if we win. The walk back to my car after a winning game is a lot more fun. When we lose, just about everyone is down in the dumps, and it's hard to engage any fans in conversation after a loss.

What I like about going to an Orioles game is being at the ballpark. I look forward to buying my peanuts, sodas, and other munchies for the game from the outside vendors. Outside the ballpark you can get a soda for one or two bucks, but inside you're looking at four bucks for a soft drink.

Same thing with peanuts. Outside you'll spend a couple of bucks. Inside, a small bag will cost you three bucks or more. It's not that I can't afford the extra money inside. But I know the vendors outside the park are trying to make a living and working hard. I usually buy from the same people each time.

I'm one of those score-keeping fans. I used to pay $5 or so for a program, but Outside Pitch sells their newsletter outside the ballpark for only $2, and that includes a stapled-in scorecard and a pencil. I regularly buy the newsletter for the articles, but I don't like their scorecard, so I print out a few before I leave for the ballpark and use my own.

After the ballgame I look forward to a couple of musicians who always play outside the game. Yes, they're looking for some money ... the hat is always out front when they're playing. The trumpet player, though, is good enough that I'll stand and watch/listen to him play for ten minutes before I walk away. Both my son and I generally add a buck or so to the pile in the hat.

We used to have a drummer outside the park who played upbeat rhythms as we walked to our cars. I haven't seen him for about a year. I hope he's back this year. He was worth a buck or two for the entertainment. Instead of a drum set, he was using upturned plastic tubs. And he was good at it. He usually drew a crowd. Again, I hope he's back this year.

I also have a favorite place to park. It's a few blocks away, but by the time I get to my car, all the traffic is gone and I never have a wait in traffic (except maybe a wait to get out of the parking lot). Once I leave the lot, I'm home in 20 minutes (I live about 10 miles away).

Oh, yeah, I enjoy the game too. Keeping score means I don't worry so much whether we win or lose. I'm keeping score on my scorecard. That's the important part of the game for me. I hope that there's more high numbers on the Orioles' side of the card. But just keeping score alone keeps me interested in the game, no matter what happens.

Normally, it is observed that more attention is paid on traditional body building and weight lifting methods. But in baseball, such traditional workouts create trouble and result in unpleasant incidents.

In baseball strength training and conditioning programs, care should be given in exercise selection. More concentration should be given on rotator cuff exercises. It should not be neglected in any case.

The best training and conditioning programs are divided into two categories. They suggest exercises for upper and lower body separately and consider the sensitivity of all organs. The purpose of the programs is to build strength and not to hold risks. This program teaches you better about risk handling.

The upper body exercises are carried out with low weight and lower body exercises with heavy weight. In traditional upper body exercises, push ups are more important. They strengthen the shoulder muscles and rotator cuff. Push ups are more preferable than bench presses. However, bench presses can also be done, yet it should be worked out with great care and concern. Only dumbbells should be used instead of heavy weights. Otherwise, injuries may occur.

Force, strength and speed are significant and vital when it comes to baseball. If the thrower is not able to throw the ball at high velocity then his participation in the team will be a question? In the same way, hitter should be able to hit the ball with extra force and power.

The basic and key purpose of baseball strength training program is to build confidence and also get protection from injuries. In training programs, any little things should not be neglected. Smalls things can make conspicuous difference and can improve your performance.

The major objective of every baseball player is to enhance and increase maximal strength in order to give power-packed hits. When better level of energy is produced, they of course help you in hitting the ball with complete strength. In this contest, bigger muscles are not important, instead stronger muscles are essential.

To enhance the maximal strengths, strength training programs should practice of plyometric exercises for both upper body and lower body. Kicking, jumping, quick changes in directions, sprinting are the most important exercises. Medicine ball exercises should also be incorporated in strength programs. It is a good idea and approach to gain strength, and further convert it into sport specific programs.

Baseball is a game in which sudden movements, reactions and variety of angles are involved. The players should have to respond with explosive power in accurate for achieving winning contest. Baseball strength training and conditioning programs should be developed, supervised and progressed by the experts of concerned field.

The Anaheim Angels clinched the American League West decisively in 2009, posting a record of 97-65. The second place Texas Rangers finished a full 10 games back at 87-75. The Angels were equally good on the road (48-33) and at home (49-32).

The stats for 2009 were solid, although not spectacular. The team ERA was 4.45, and batting was.285. The nucleus of that team is intact, although they lost designated hitter, Vladimir Guerrero, to Texas and pitcher John Lackey to Boston. However, off-season acquisitions of Joel Pineiro, who went 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA for the Cardinals, and hitter Hideki Matsui, should fill any gaps left by their departure.

Bobby Abreu, who batted.293 in 2009, has been granted a two-year extension, and Jered Weaver (who ended the year with a 3.75 ERA and 211 inning pitched), Reggie Willits, Howie Kendrick, Mike Napoli (a.272 hitter in 2009), and Fernando Rodney have all signed. Players who were not offered a contract and thus became free agents include Dustin Moseley, Matt Brown, and Jose Arredondo (who had surgery on his right elbow two days before going free agent). Darren Oliver, who gave the team 73 solid innings with a 2.71 ERA in 2009, has declared free agency, as have Kelvim Escobar (who had only 5 inning pitched in 2009), Chone Figgins (who hit.298 for 2009), and Robb Quinlan.

If the Angels can stay healthy, particularly in their starting rotation, they have a good chance of taking the AL West again in 2010. Their most serious competition will likely come from the Texas Rangers, who have been making some quiet off-season acquisitions to bolster their team. Unresolved issues regarding the sale of the Rangers, however, may prove a distraction to the team and make it easier for the Angels to repeat as division champions.

The Angels eliminated Boston from the 2009 playoffs, but ultimately fell to the Yankees. And while prospects for their division look good, with many giving them an edge over Texas while some are calling it a toss-up, the Angels taking the pennant in 2010 does not seem likely. The American League has teams that are stronger in all areas, and currently the Yankees seem the most likely to dominate in 2010.

In 2009, the Angels ranked second in stolen bases, but in every other category they were, at best, mid-pack. Overall, the team was solid enough to win the West and is probably good enough to repeat. But merely being a solid team is seldom enough to win pennants. The Angels have no "bankable" players, such as a Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera, relying instead on a nucleus of dependable, if not particularly explosive, players to get the job done.

The bullpen is questionable for 2010, causing significant damage to the team ERA during 2009. The starting rotation is a good one, without major weakness but also without a major star. It remains to be seen how much impact the loss of Lackey will have, and whether Pineiro can offset the effect.

As 2009 division champions, the fans will be expecting, perhaps demanding, a repeat. The increased pressure will likely not be felt by the seasoned veterans, but some of the younger players may have problems coping with it.

It's just silly to get overly confident about your team's accomplishments no matter how good they're looking. I'm a Red Sox fan and while I'd LOVE them to win the AL East, I'm not about to go buy some pre-made t-shirt advertising that. I'll wait until they actually do win the AL East (if they do) and then I'll wear my AL East champs t-shirt. Being arrogant and a show-off (usually) gets you know where.

The 16 pitchers who tried out for the school’s team this year averaged 88.2 mph, and the standard deviation was 3.4 mph. What is the value of the test statistic?

There is no value.

Any good pitcher or coach (or batter) will tell you speed is not as important as movement.

That's why people with fastballs in the low 90s with lots of movement like Petitte, Maddox, etc.. are much more successful than people with high 90s straight fastballs like Kyle Farnsworth.

Thank goodness the Yankees have him.

Big Daddy, George Steinbrenner, is a Yankee fan's delight. As a Yankee fan I love that so many other fans hate what George has done and continues to do. He gets the players that he needs. He pushes forward to get another championship for his Yankees. I can visualize George sitting in his office making calls to see if the superstar that he so highly touts is close to signing a Yankee contract.

When the Yankees have been in need of a pitcher they get Roger Clemens, or Mike Mussina, or Catfish Hunter, or Randy Johnson. Some of the top pitchers in the game. If it's a slugger they need George brings the best to New York. Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Gary Sheffield, or Alex Rodriguez will don the Yankee pinstripes. Having the best for the Yankees and their fans makes all the difference. We know as fans that our team is doing whatever it can to bring in a championship. And when all is said and done - what more can we ask for?

George is relentless. He wants another World Series ring for the Bronx Bombers. Six is not enough for him. Arriving at the playoffs 14 times is not the name of this game. Winning the World Series is the only game in town. I have to admire that kind of pursuit. I have always felt funny when I see a player or an owner in a TV interview rejoice when his team comes in second. Something feels off. Second place is not a prize worth having At least not with George.

I love his spirit. I love his attitude about winning. I love winning it all in the fall. Has there been another owner in any sport, in the last 25 years that has operated with the same intensity that George has had? In any sport? I think not.

Say what you will about the big guy. He is money hungry, he has an ego problem, he stops at nothing, he plays unfair. I do not think he cares. what others are saying He has a cause and a mission. Bring championships to New York.

So I salute you George Steinbrenner, principal owner of my New York Yankees. Thanks for taking the team on your back and going for it all the time. While I may not agree with all your tactics I am fascinated with your ongoing will to win.

Imagine what it must have been like playing dominoes, or marbles or any other game with George when he was a kid. Do you think he had to win?

If Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, or Yogi Berra were playing on another team other than the Yankees and became available through free agency, do you think George would try and get him? What do you think?

should the yankees sign jim edmonds or gary sheffield?

so the yankees address their pitching woes by adding oft injured one year wonders cc sabathia and aj burnett. brought back andy pettitte on the cheap, oft-injured phenom joba chamberlain, and playoff choker chien ming wang
but the once imposing lineups look very vulnerable right now. jason giambi is gone, leaving matsui (no power) at dh. career minor leaguer cody ransom is filling in for a-rod at 3rd. brett garnder (who?) is the starter at center field. derek jeter's power is declining. mark texeira is a consistent hitter in the mold of jim thome in his prime (with better defense, slightly less power) but not exactly an impact player in the mold of a-rod, manny, barry bonds, and vladimir guerrero. robinson cano was a bust last year. he's a question mark.
sign jim edmonds to play centerfield or at least split duty with damon. or move damon to centerfield and sign sheffield.

Edmonds would be the more likely of the two, but if they were to sign him by now, it would have happened already. I don't think Jim wants to play for a minor league deal. Maybe if Andruw Jones comes back on the market, they'll give him a chance. I see them giving the spot to Gardner or Melky though, or occasionally using Damon or Swisher in CF. There's no way Gary Sheffield ends up a Yankee though. He couldn't even ended on worst ties with them. At this point, I think Gary wants to play in his native Tampa, where it's warm, and nice and cool playing indoors.
