As this is an active market valuations of different pieces change from year to year. Many factors can determine this from the popularity of the athlete/team to the economic conditions of the time. Therefore, it is vital to have an updated guide showing current values. A two year old guide is worthless-throw it out!

For example, experienced sports card collectors prefer using monthly price guide magazines such as Beckett's guides. This sort of info keeps you up to date but you may find that not all collectibles are in there simply because there is not enough space! For this you would have to look at some of the reputable yearly guides produced by Tuff Stuff or Beckett's. Another option is to go to your local hobby shop or find a sports memorabilia dealer local to you. They may be willing to provide a no obligation estimate. However, it probably isn't a good idea to sell to them as they will want to get it at a low price before selling on for a profit. There is no harm in this - it is a business after all - but the smart seller will go somewhere else knowing it's probably worth more on the private market.

When it comes to high end sports memorabilia it may be worth paying a specialized appraiser. If an item is incredibly rare then there is little in the way of a benchmark on the open market so consulting an expert from a reputable company is your best option. Look at the top auction companies in your niche as the places to go for this.

Now, all of this may be pointless if your collectible has no value at all because youbought badly in the first place! First of all look for something related to a popular star/team. Secondly try and get something that is rare. Finally, you must keep it in as good condition as you possibly can. The first force is "Barriers to Entry" and this determines what new companies are required to do to enter into the sports autograph and sports memorabilia industry. Companies are required to have financial funding to compete in this market to obtain sports memorabilia and contracts with athletes. Companies are also required to have a brand or reputation for sports autographs and sports memorabilia. Examples of companies competing in this industry are Steiner Sports, Hollywood Collectibles, AllAuthenticAutographs.com, Upper Deck and  Mounted Memories. The second force is the "Level of Rivalry" or competition in the industry. The level of competition is high as there many companies, high fixed costs and low switching costs by consumers. Companies seek to gain market share of the sports autograph and sports memorabilia business by changing prices, product differentiation, vertical and horizontal distribution, and exploiting relationships with suppliers. The third force is the "Threat of Substitutes" which refers to what would consumers choose in place of purchasing a sports autograph of Tiger Woods. Substitutes for example would be going to sporting events or using the money to purchase items other that autographed sports memorabilia. I have been a collector for many years of mainly sports memorabilia (game used jersey cards, autographed cards, and limited edition cards). I have always loved sports, I love to find acceptable deals, and frequently do. I will share some of the secrets with you here on how to find inexpensive memorabilia right away! First, look at auctions.

Take ebay for example. Some card sellers sale jersey, autographs, etc., don't always know what they are doing when listing their cards and memorabilia. When I say memorabilia, I am talking about limited edition cards (1/1 cards; the only one made or very rare cards with full COA from major card companies).

The hardest time to get your sports memorabilia is on key dates and times. I am talking about 5pm to 7pm, especially on a Sunday or Tuesday. This is by cause of people are off work browsing and selling. The best time to find sports memorabilia is on "key days and times." This is early in the morning, and on days excluding Sunday and Tuesday. Don't avoid these days, but you have a higher bidding population
The Secret: Select "newly listed" early in the a.m. or late p.m. This way you have it made have been the only person to first see new auction.

You could be surprised how many people put memorabilia cards on at midnight or 2am! Next if it has a Best Offer, take advantage of this. On a "best offer" you could be surprised on what can do be accepted, so give it a try (make it reasonable). Next use a general search. So if you are looking for a Mickey Mantle jersey card, just type in "Mantle". This will give you the broadest search results.

Finally take advantage of collectors fresh only collect a certain player. This is by cause of many times they have purchased a box or packs of cards looking for their player. Then they sell off the fresh players because they are only after a certain player. Many collectors like this, don't realize, know, or fail to find out the value of the cards they list. Many times they will put a fresh sports memorabilia (jersey/autograph) card on for a very low price to sell off cards they received and don't want. I find almost daily, cards & sports memorabilia more are way below book value/sports guide value. You have to be quick which is why I say start with "newly listed".

Use a reputable sports price guide so you have an idea what the card is worth. However, on limited cards like 1/1 or less than 10 produced, generally will not have a price due to the "scarcity" of the card. For example, I picked up an Alex Rodriguez triple jersey card, limited numbered for .00. The card books for over 0.00 dollars! I picked it up early morning (around 7am) on a Friday.
