Baseball is America's sport. It brings out the boys of summer. While it has had its ups and downs, it has never left us. It is part of the American family, like a brother that sometimes is the hero, sometimes the villain, often embraced, sometimes annoying but never ever turned away. Our children take baseball instruction and baseball hitting drills. We are devoted. Throughout baseballs short history there have been many memorable moments. Here is a quick accounting of a few of those moments brought to you by the heavy hitters.

It was February 2 in 1876, when eight teams became founding members of the National Baseball league. The first National League game was officially played on April 1st, 1876. Boston played Philadelphia and won. On February 2, 1900 the American league was born. It was made up of six teams including: Boston, Baltimore, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Chicago. In April of 1923 Babe Ruth hits his first home run. It was the first home run in Yankee Stadium. Eight years later on August 21st of 1931 Babe Ruth hits his 600th home run.

On May 15th, 1941 the amazing hitting streak of Joe DiMaggio begins. He would hit in 56 consecutive games. In September of that same year Ted Williams would finish the season with a batting average of .406, making him the only batter to ever hit over .400 for a season. In 1961 Roger Maris sends 61 balls over the fence giving him the record for most home runs in a season. Mark McGwire hits 62 in 1998. Sammy Sosa hits his 61st and 62nd home run five days later on September 13, 1998. Barry Bonds will break the record with 73 home runs in 2001.

In 1974, on April 8th, Hank Aaron smacks the ball out of the park and hits his 715th home run, bettering Babe Ruth and moving into the front position on the list of career home runs. He will have 755 before he lays down his bat in 1976. A year latter, Sadaharu Oh sends a ball out of the park in Japan. It is his 756th home run. On October 8th, 1977 Reggie Jackson, Mr. October, hits three home runs. He hits them on three consecutive pitches and leads the Yankees to their 21st world series championship.

On September 11th 1985, Mr. Hustle, Pete Rose hits his 4,192 hit beating out Ty Cobb. Four year later he would be banned from baseball for his gambling offenses. He finished his career with 4,256 hits. These are all players that knew how to swing a bat. There are many other famous players that were great at the plate and in the field. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Lou Gehris, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Duke Snider, Roberto Clemente and many more brought excitement to the game of Baseball. While the 50's and 60'a may have been the golden years of baseball, it is still dear to America's heart. Basketball, football and NASCAR may have grabbed some of the spotlight, but nothing will ever touch these great moments in baseball history.

Life as a Little League or Pony League catcher can be tough. You can read baseball tips on this, baseball tips on that, do drill for this and train for that. Listen to this person, listen to that person. Try this and try that.

But still, you find yourself not throwing many people out in games. It seems like there are always balls getting by you and going back to the backstop. You may have gotten whacked way more times than you'd like by wild pitches. Long games and hot games. Is catching really worth it?

Well, fear not young catchers! Here are a few baseball tips and advice for you on why you should hang in there if you really like catching.

Right now at your age in Little League or Pony League there are things going on that you really have no control over. This makes catching seem impossible at times. It can be discouraging to young catchers because at this age and in these leagues success doesn't come often. You're not throwing a lot of people out, balls are flying everywhere (and hitting you) and you many times feel like you're the catcher only because no one else is stupid enough to do it. Well, those things may be true right now, but here are some things to consider:

• In Little League and Pony League the bases are pretty short. When someone takes off, you're relying on a good pitch from the pitcher, a perfect throw from you and a perfect catch and tag from the second baseman or shortstop. These things don't happen routinely in Little League and are just getting better in Pony League.
• Kids are bigger, stronger and faster these days. Look at the Little League World Series this year. They moved the fence back a good distance because the home runs keep increasing and there are just too many. (yes, those high tech bats played a role too!) My point is, the bases are short and there are a lot of fast runners. This is not a good combination for throwing runners out.
• Many young pitchers at these ages throw a lot of balls and wild pitches. You need good pitches to have any chance at all of throwing someone out. Wild pitches and runners advancing easily can be discouraging You can catch, but you can't pitch and catch. So you are at the mercy of the pitcher too.
• Young pitchers don't always know how to hold runners well or perform good pick-off moves to keep runners honest. Watch a Pony League game sometime. Smart runners will be more than half way down to second base by the time the catcher gets the ball. There's nothing you can do here. Just do your best.

So if you are a young catcher and get a little bit discouraged from time to time, remember these baseball tips and keep your head up.

You can't control the pitched ball. It's going to go where it's going to go. What you need to do is become very, very good at blocking the ball. So what if you don't pop up and throw the runner out. That time will come. Just focus on becoming a technically good blocking catcher. This will always make you stand out from other catchers and this becomes even more true as you get older.

Throwing runners out? If it happens, great! But, what you want to do is develop fast, correct footwork instead of worrying too much about how many people you throw out. Learn correct footwork and practice it over and over and develop a technically correct delivery to second base. Wait and see what happens once the bases become 90 feet apart. You'll be amazed.

Work on other things like:

• Handling bunts, or choppers in front of the plate
• Footwork to block home plate on throws from the outfield. Again, the Little League World Series had great plays at home this year.
• Handling passed balls

Also, and very important, work on that thing sitting on top of your shoulders! Be confident, know that you are a good catcher and believe in yourself and your ability.

When those bases become 90 feet apart, the whole game changes for catchers. If you really worked on being technically good, fast feet and good delivery, you'll throw a lot of people out because now your pitchers and fielders are also much better.

Block everything. People will notice you for this. This will separate you from other catchers. This is true right into High School. Lazy catchers who won't block balls will sit at that point, regardless of their arm strength.

Consider these baseball tips that you've just read young catchers. Stick with it. It will pay off and catching will become a lot more fun once the bases are 90 feet. Just be ready and prepared with your skills when this time comes. And when it does, those same kids that might have thought you were stupid for catching years ago will look to you for the big play, the bases loaded block of a wild pitch, or the big throw that turns the game around. This is when you'll realize that it was all worth it...being a catcher. The BEST position to play!

I think it's a fair comparison.

Both managers have proven that they can win when given great teams. For Torre, it's been the $200 million Yankees loaded with stars for the past decade. For Mack, it was guys like Home Run Baker, Eddie Collins, Eddie Plank and Chief Bender, then studs like Mickey Cochrane and Jimmie Foxx.

Both have proven that, given a crappy team, they can also lose. Mack has a career losing record because of the seasons that the A's would inevitably suffer whenever they sold off their players. Joe Torre had a losing record in his pre-Yankee career because he, too, wasn't working with his current group of Yankee superstars.

I don't think either is a bad manager, but I think that they both point towards the fact that a manager can only do so much, and that it comes down to the players on the field.

I don't really care whether we win or lose, but it's always nicer if we win. The walk back to my car after a winning game is a lot more fun. When we lose, just about everyone is down in the dumps, and it's hard to engage any fans in conversation after a loss.

What I like about going to an Orioles game is being at the ballpark. I look forward to buying my peanuts, sodas, and other munchies for the game from the outside vendors. Outside the ballpark you can get a soda for one or two bucks, but inside you're looking at four bucks for a soft drink.

Same thing with peanuts. Outside you'll spend a couple of bucks. Inside, a small bag will cost you three bucks or more. It's not that I can't afford the extra money inside. But I know the vendors outside the park are trying to make a living and working hard. I usually buy from the same people each time.

I'm one of those score-keeping fans. I used to pay $5 or so for a program, but Outside Pitch sells their newsletter outside the ballpark for only $2, and that includes a stapled-in scorecard and a pencil. I regularly buy the newsletter for the articles, but I don't like their scorecard, so I print out a few before I leave for the ballpark and use my own.

After the ballgame I look forward to a couple of musicians who always play outside the game. Yes, they're looking for some money ... the hat is always out front when they're playing. The trumpet player, though, is good enough that I'll stand and watch/listen to him play for ten minutes before I walk away. Both my son and I generally add a buck or so to the pile in the hat.

We used to have a drummer outside the park who played upbeat rhythms as we walked to our cars. I haven't seen him for about a year. I hope he's back this year. He was worth a buck or two for the entertainment. Instead of a drum set, he was using upturned plastic tubs. And he was good at it. He usually drew a crowd. Again, I hope he's back this year.

I also have a favorite place to park. It's a few blocks away, but by the time I get to my car, all the traffic is gone and I never have a wait in traffic (except maybe a wait to get out of the parking lot). Once I leave the lot, I'm home in 20 minutes (I live about 10 miles away).

Oh, yeah, I enjoy the game too. Keeping score means I don't worry so much whether we win or lose. I'm keeping score on my scorecard. That's the important part of the game for me. I hope that there's more high numbers on the Orioles' side of the card. But just keeping score alone keeps me interested in the game, no matter what happens.

As the steroid talk swirls around baseball like the juice surging into Jason Giambi's veins, America's favorite pastime continues to be bruised, right when spring training is getting started. First, it was Giambi's admission of taking the muscle-enhancing drug. Then, Jose Canseco shocked the sports world with his tell-all book about his use of steroids, swinging a syringe with better accuracy than he ever swung a bat. Now, it's baseball's homerun king, Barry Bonds, making us despise the sport's most talented player, with his strange ramblings at a preseason press conference, laced with perfunctory glances at interviewers, lame defenses of his own lousy image, along with distracting accusations aimed at various targets.

Man, is this guy easy to hate. "I don't know what cheating is," he says about the potential help steroid use gives to baseball players. How can adding dozens of pounds of muscles increase ones production, Barry wonders? This coming from a guy who entered the league weighing roughly 180 pounds before adding 46 pounds to his frame in a little over three seasons. Furthermore, in his first seven years in the league Bonds never hit 35 home runs. He was a 19 to 25 HR guy, except for two seasons of 33 and 34. Now, the ballooned up Barry, the one who doesn't believe steroids can help hitters, bashes 45 or more homers each season, as if he were hitting super balls. But he's not cheating, he claims.

In addition to the pitiful, "I don't know what cheating is" statement, Bonds managed to blame all of his woes on the probing media and, of course, on racism. "Babe Ruth was a great player," Bonds says, "but he wasn't black. I'm black, and it's tougher for blacks." Only some tears would make his act more incredible. Again, I say, this guy is easier to hate than cancer. First of all, what problems does he have? Millions and millions of dollars in his pocket? Playing a game for a living? Incredible popularity? A few questions from interviewers? This is the life of Barry Bonds, and this guy has the audacity to pull the race card? Every African American and baseball fan should join me in hating this racist crybaby. "But I'm not a racist," Bonds says. I wish I had a dollar for every person who ever made a comment like this one and then followed it up with "But I'm not a racist." I'd probably have as much money as Barry.

Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player ever, hounded every waking moment by the media, never made such a ridiculous statement about black people in sports having it tougher. Jerry Rice, the greatest wide receiver in NFL history, hands down, never whined about discrimination making his life more difficult than his white predecessors. It's because these guys didn't use steroids, and these guys were true, hard-working, non-cheating professionals. Not to mention the fact that they were gentlemen.

This is not to say that racism doesn't still exist in America. It obviously does. In fact, it may even exist in some sports. But it does not exist to the extent that Barry suggests. Does Barry deal with death threats, like Hank Aaron did the entire season he approached Babe Ruth's mark? Of course not. In fact, for some bizarre, inexplicable reason, there is a large contingent of Bonds fans actually rooting for this jerk to break Aaron's record. It's hard to figure. Aaron never complained about racism, and he entered the batters box nightly, fearing for his very life. And now, 30 years later, he is one of the most revered leaders the game has. Aaron, like Jordan and Rice and Ruth and a myriad of other great athletes, has a legacy. What legacy does the cheating racist, Barry Bonds, have? I think the answer lies within the question. He'll be remembered as a baseball player, who could have been one of the greatest ever, if he hadn't been a cheater and a liar and a racist.

Meanwhile, the more Bonds and others like him talk, the bigger baseball's black eye gets.

I think there are a couple of things that could work against him:

1) Attitude - He could be a real jerk to the press, and even his teammates weren't his biggest fans. I'm not saying this is a valid reason to keep him out, but the BBWAA don't always use the best judgment and often let outside influences play a role.

2) The voters may downgrade his numbers because of Bonds, believing that any decent hitter could up those numbers with Barry in the lineup.

Personally, I think he'll get in and I'd have no problem with that. And as much as I hate to admit it, I actually thought back in 1992 that the Jays made a good move trading him. I never thought he'd amount to more than an average player, which may explain why I'm not a scout.

According to Baseball-Reference.com, the 10 players whose career stats most closely resemble those of Dale Murphy are, in descending order: Joe Carter, Duke Snider, Don Baylor, Ron Santo, Gil Hodges, Johnny Bench, Ruben Sierra, Jack Clark, Ellis Burks and George Foster.

Snider and Bench are in the Hall of Fame. Santo and Hodges should be, but aren't. Carter, in my opinion, is a near-miss player as far as the Hall is concerned. Baylor and Burks were very good players, but fall well short. Sierra, Clark and Foster were all on the way, but tailed off dramatically and will never make it.

Murphy had his last good year at age 35 and then barely played, just like Clark. And the lack of postseason performances (only one Division Title, no Pennants) hurts Murphy.

He was a very good player from age 22 to 25, a great one from 26 to 31, a very good one again from 32 to 35, and that was it. That's admirable, but it's not "complete dominance of the 1980s," and it's not enough to get him into the Hall of Fame.

Where would you look for an answer to old baseball question?

Seems like I remember Mickey Mantle hitting a homerun into the the upper deck Bleachers of Briggs staium (later Tigers Stadium) in the late 50's or early 1960's. Where in the world of baseball trivia would someone find proof of this?

Your best source would probably be the Guinness Book of World Records.
They list Mantle as having hit the longest measured home run in history at 634 feet (!).
It did NOT land in the upper deck bleachers but instead cleared the roof above the right field bleachers. So I'm not sure if this is the home run you are refferring to.
This occurred on September 10, 1960 at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. (The name change to "Tiger Stadium" occurred one year later)
Mantle's home run came in the top of the 7th inning with two runners aboard.
