Over the past few weeks in college football, the rankings have shifted around like a game of musical chairs. 11 of the preseason's top 25 teams no longer hold the honor of being in the highest echelon of college football. They have since been replaced by some up and coming teams; namely South Florida, Kentucky, BC, South Carolina, Oregon, Missouri, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Purdue, Kansas State and Clemson. But, as a die hard fan, I keep asking myself who from that list has what it takes to stay in the top 25. Are they here to stay or are they simply riding a surprising and brief run of luck? The following is an analysis of who among these teams are true contenders and who are pretenders.

1. Oregon - This team is definitely a contender. Coming from a very talented conference that boasts 4 teams in the top 25 and a very good UCLA Bruins team, the Ducks have shown that they can flat out play. Had it not been for a bit of bad luck against Cal, they very well could be undefeated and in the top 5 in the nation.

2. Clemson - This is a bit of a toss up. The Tigers are 4-1 right now, only losing to a very good Georgia Bulldogs squad. Yes, they did beat Florida State who is usually a football powerhouse. However, the rest of their wins have come against sub-par opponents. The Tigers can stake a claim to their contender status by beating Virgina Tech this week.

3. South Carolina - Like Oregon, the Gamecocks are here to stay. They are currently 4-1. But, they lost to LSU who is virtually unstoppable at the moment. Also, they handed the Bulldogs their only defeat of the season, in Georgia no less. That's impressive. SC has a tough road ahead with 3 top 25 teams in the near future, but I think they are good enough to weather the storm.

4. South Florida - The Bulls are seeing red at the moment. Fresh off of their win against West Virginia, USF looks very good. However, they are a pretender. The Bulls have been very opportunistic this season, beating the mountaineers and Auburn, but their schedule is going to prove too difficult for this Cinderella.

5. Boston College - The Eagles have definitely had a flying start to their season. At 5-0 they are playing some impressive football. But wasn't that expected. Aside from Georgia Tech (who has been a little disappointing themselves), the Eagles haven't really played anyone worth mentioning. Don't get me wrong, BC is a good football team. But with Miami, Florida State, Clemson and Virginia Tech looming in the distance, they may not end up with a good enough record to make a bowl game.

6. Kentucky - The Wildcats have literally come from left field in 2007. Were they even on the radar in preseason? UK is having a dream season at the moment, beating two very good football teams in Louisville and Arkansas. But, look at who they have left to play - LSU, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Again, like BC, the Wildcats are a good team. But it is unlikely that they will stay in the top 25 for long.

7. Arizona State - Yes, the Sun Devils are 5-0. Yes, the Sun Devils beat a good Colorado team. But are they a top 25 team? NO!!! The facts are pretty straight forward. They play Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Washington and USC during the second half of the season. There are few teams, if any, who could withstand that kind week in and week out battering.

8. Kansas State - Contender. While Kansas State has only proven their mettle in one game this season (41-21 win vs Texas), they don't have that tough of a schedule in the upcoming weeks. If they can past Colorado, it will be smooth sailing until they meet Nebraska and Missouri. The Cornhuskers and Tigers are both tough teams, but I have a feeling that Kansas State will prove to be tough themselves.

9. Missouri - Let's face it. The Tigers are a good team. But are they top 25 material? In the past maybe, but not this year. They will not be good enough to get past Nebraska or Oklahoma. Then, to have any kind of noteworthy record, the Tigers would have to get past Texas A&M, Kansas State and Colorade - all good teams. In my opinion, it is just not going to happen.

10. Cincinnati - Major Pretender. This is an easy one. While the Bearcats have been averaging over 46 points per game, they've done it against teams my high school could probably beat. They are not going to get past WVU, USF, Louisville or Rutgers. They may not even make a bowl game.

11. Purdue - This once great football team has been rather shabby in recent years. This year is no different. Like most other Top 25 Cinderellas, the Boilermakers have had an easy road thus far. But, can they keep it up against the Buckeyes? Not likely. Are they going to beat a Michigan team that is playing with a chip on its shoulder. Probably not. It is going to be a long season for Purdue, unless they come up with some huge performances.

When all is said and done, you have to give it to these teams for performing as well as they have this year. But, let's face it. Nature is going to run its course. It is going to be survival of the fittest and like always, the bigger, better teams are going to ruin the fairy tale. Prediction: Oregon and South Carolina will stay in the top 25 and Kansas State has a chance as well. But the rest of the lot will be no where to be seen at the end of the season.

There are two others that no one has mentioned: The Florida A&M Rattlers (they're located in Tallahassee) and the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (they're located in Daytona Beach). These are predominately African American schools, also known as HBCUs or Historically Black Colleges and Universities, that play in the (Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) of the Football Championship Subdivision or FCS, which up until 2005 was known as Division 1-AA. Their annual football game is called the Florida Classic, which this year was won by FAMU 42-6.

It'll probably be much like last year... lots of wide open receivers being missed because the QB has absolutely no idea what the hell is going on out there. Thompson has no QB skills what so ever. I really don't think Stoops should start him. He want be giving his team a chance to win if he does. They'll go 8-5.

But there is one bright spot for the up coming season for OU. A true freshman running back named DeMarco Murray. (6'0" 185lbs, 4.2 speed !!!) He'll be the number two back, and believe it or not he's just as good if not better than Peterson. I've never seen anybody that can do what he can do other than Adrian Peterson and Reggie Bush !!! He's a very very very rare talent, and after Peterson leaves to go to NFL after this season you want even be able to tell that he's gone. Murray is a future Heisman candidate himself... remember where you heard his name first people !!! I'm telling you right now !!! He's going to turn the college football world upside down !!!

What is in a football team's name? Throughout the NCAA football season, we constantly hear the names of various teams as we watch games, learn scores, and manage our college fantasy football squads. However, we rarely think about the origins of various schools' names. Here are some of the fascinating stories about some NCAA schools' names:

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

In the history of NCAA football, Alabama has become one of the most successful teams. However, have you ever wondered about the history of the team's name? Newspapers originally referred to the football name as "Crimson White." This alluded to the school colors. It later became the "Thin Red Line." However, in a 1907 game between Alabama and Auburn, the two teams battled in a sea of red mud. Thus, Alabama became the "Crimson Tide."

2. Penn State Nittany Lions

We are familiar with mountain Lions, but what is the significance of Penn State's "Nittany" Lions? It all began with a Penn State graduate named H.D. "Joe" Mason.

Mason became inspired after seeing a live Princeton tiger on its campus. A Penn State newspaper then sponsored Mason's quest to choose a mascot for Penn State. The school ultimately chose a lion, and it is most likely the first college to have a lion as its mascot. The "Nittany" refers to the school's location at the base of Mount Nittany. According to local Native American legend, Nittany (also Nita-Nee) was an American Indian princess.

3. Arkansas Razorbacks

Before they were the Razorbacks, Arkansas was the Cardinals. Students selected the mascot, due to the school's colors of cardinal and white. The name "Razorbacks" originated from a talk that the first paid Arkansas football coach, Hugo Bezdek, made to the students of Arkansas. Bezdek gave the talk after the school's seventh victory during the season. He observed that the team had played like a "wild band of Razorback Hogs." The rest, as they say, is history. Starting in 1910, Arkansas had a new mascot: The Razorbacks.

4. Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma has become renowned for its play on the gridiron. However, have you ever wondered what exactly a Sooner is? Prior to the U.S. government's opening of regions in the Indian Territory for settlement, Sooners were actually people who entered the lands illegally. "Sooners" first referred to settlers in 1889 who moved onto the Oklahoma Lands prior to 12:00 noon on April 22, 1889.

5. Tennessee Volunteers

We all know what volunteers are. However, to which volunteers does the name of the Tennessee Volunteers refer? During the early portion of the War of 1812, Tennessee earned the nickname, "The Volunteer State." President James Madison ordered General Andrew Jackson to enlist 1,500 volunteer soldiers from Tennessee. The troops were to battle Native Americans and the British, but they never fought during the war. General Andrew Jackson would later become the U.S. president.

3. Only 49ers great Steve Young has more career rushing touchdows as a quarterback than former Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart.

4. Mike Webster was the longtime center for the Pittsburgh Steelers, eventually earning enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He also has the distinction of being named the starting center on both the 1970s NFL All Decade Team as well as the 1980s NFL All Decade Team.

5. In the entire history of the Pittsburgh Steelers, dating back to 1933, the team has only posted one winless season. That year of no victories came in 1943 when because of worker shortages related to World War II they had combined their roster with the Chicago Cardinals and gone 0-10.

The Steelers have had a long and colorful history in the National Football League, they have finished on both the top and bottom of the league standings. The team has also had some great players over the years including Elbie Nickel, Ernie Stautner, Andy Russell, Jack Butler, Terry Bradshaw, Jerome Bettis, Mean Joe Greene, L.C. Houston has a rich and proud history of professional sports. With football being such an important part of life in Texas, the city of Houston boasts a rich tradition of professional football going back 50 years. With the loss of the Oilers in 1996 it was only a matter of time before pro football would be restored to the city and its loyal fans.

The first professional football team in Houston was the Houston Oilers. The team was started in 1959 by owner Bud Adams who was also a co-founder of the AFL. The Houston Oilers took part in the first ever AFL championship match and beat the then Los Angeles Chargers to claim the title. The oilers and their fans continued to enjoy many years of football in Houston before their owner decided to unceremoniously move the team to Tennessee in 1996 with the lure of a new state of the art stadium which they moved into in 1998. Despite huge public outcry against the move the owner decided to move the team anyway and pay millions to the city of Houston for damages for the loss of the team to the city. With football being such a huge part of Texas it would not be long before professional football would be returned to the city of Houston and their great and loyal fans. However, it was not easy to get a new team and many obstacles had to be overcome before the NFL would grant Houston with a new franchise.

In 1997 the now current majority owner Bob Mcnair began a push to bring professional football back to Houston by establishing a new organization called Houston NFL Holdings. In 1998 the NFL announced that it had narrowed its search for a new location for its 32nd franchise to three possible locations. These were Toronto, Los Angeles and Houston. Los Angeles quickly became the front runner to get the new franchise mainly because of its huge media market. Houston officials announced that they would build a new domed stadium as part of their plan to compete for the new franchise. At the same time entertainment guru Michael Ovitz announced plans to a new state of the art stadium in Los Angeles. Both Mcnair and Ovitz would put pressure on the NFL to make a decision on the new franchise by early 1999 so as to keep public support from waning. Meanwhile Ovitz would receive competition in his own market from real estate developer Ed Roski whose proposal involved renovating the Los Angeles coliseum.

In early 1999 the NFL owners voted in favor of Los Angeles with their decision being contingent on the city putting together an acceptable ownership team and stadium deal. If they were not able to accomplish this, the NFL announced it would then turn its attention to awarding Houston with the new franchise.

Subsequently the city of Los Angeles decided it would not permit tax dollars to be used to help build a new stadium and neither Roski nor Orwitz were willing to work together or build a new stadium on private financing alone. Since Houston was prepared to build a brand new state of the art stadium, they then became the front runner to get the new NFL franchise. Despite late efforts by Los Angeles to secure a deal the NFL finally decided to award Houston with the new team in October of 1999 and accepted Mcnairs 700 million dollar offer as well as award Houston with the 2004 Super Bowl.

Thanks to persistence and hard work professional football had been restored to Houston where it belongs. The new franchise would decide upon the name Houston Texans after receiving permission to use the name from Lamar Hunt who had previously founded the name Dallas Texans and which later would become the Kansas City Chiefs. With former Denver Bronco assistant Gary Kubiak now in place as the head coach and quarterback Matt Schaub signed, the Houston Texans hope to establish a winning tradition for years to come. Along with their loyal fans they are looking toward the new season as a breakthrough year.

He's a hybrid of a throwback and new breed, he's definitely one of a kind. He's a perfect fit for Urban's system. I remember watching this kid in highschool where he would look like the old kid in the neighborhood playing against all the younger kids. I have to admit, it hurt a little when he announced he was going to play for the University of Florida. But I still think the guy is an amazing talent and I actually like to watch him play. I just imagine him wearing Garnet and Gold instead of Blue and Orange....

The rule is as follows: you have 5 years to complete your eligibility upon beginning your first year of intercollegiate athletics. So, if you have never begun a single year of sports while in college, then you still have 5 years to complete your 4 years of eligibility.

With a huge population, and no other pro-football teams, I think it makes sense for the Raiders to move back to LA LA Land. Los Angeles Raiders even sounds better, it rolls off the tongue. In my opinion Davis should build a new state-of-the-art Stadium in downtown LA, move the team back and hire John Madden to coach them. What do you think?

L.A. Had the Chargers back in the day and they moved. The raiders moved to LA from oakland then moved back when they realized the support really isn't there. The rams felt the same way. LA had 3 chances and blew it all 3 times. They don't deserve another chance regardless of how big the population is. Look at Jacksonville for example. Sure large population but no one wants to go watch them play even when they are good. Some places just aren't football places and don't deserve a team.

Good question!!! For loosing to Appl. State, they should be banned from the rankings. I don't care if it was early in the season, they were supposed to be #1 HAHA!!!!! Even if they won their next 10 games by 100 points, they should not be ranked... no worries, OHIO STATE will beat them down again on Nov. 17th
