Over the past few weeks in college football, the rankings have shifted around like a game of musical chairs. 11 of the preseason's top 25 teams no longer hold the honor of being in the highest echelon of college football. They have since been replaced by some up and coming teams; namely South Florida, Kentucky, BC, South Carolina, Oregon, Missouri, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Purdue, Kansas State and Clemson. But, as a die hard fan, I keep asking myself who from that list has what it takes to stay in the top 25. Are they here to stay or are they simply riding a surprising and brief run of luck? The following is an analysis of who among these teams are true contenders and who are pretenders.

1. Oregon - This team is definitely a contender. Coming from a very talented conference that boasts 4 teams in the top 25 and a very good UCLA Bruins team, the Ducks have shown that they can flat out play. Had it not been for a bit of bad luck against Cal, they very well could be undefeated and in the top 5 in the nation.

2. Clemson - This is a bit of a toss up. The Tigers are 4-1 right now, only losing to a very good Georgia Bulldogs squad. Yes, they did beat Florida State who is usually a football powerhouse. However, the rest of their wins have come against sub-par opponents. The Tigers can stake a claim to their contender status by beating Virgina Tech this week.

3. South Carolina - Like Oregon, the Gamecocks are here to stay. They are currently 4-1. But, they lost to LSU who is virtually unstoppable at the moment. Also, they handed the Bulldogs their only defeat of the season, in Georgia no less. That's impressive. SC has a tough road ahead with 3 top 25 teams in the near future, but I think they are good enough to weather the storm.

4. South Florida - The Bulls are seeing red at the moment. Fresh off of their win against West Virginia, USF looks very good. However, they are a pretender. The Bulls have been very opportunistic this season, beating the mountaineers and Auburn, but their schedule is going to prove too difficult for this Cinderella.

5. Boston College - The Eagles have definitely had a flying start to their season. At 5-0 they are playing some impressive football. But wasn't that expected. Aside from Georgia Tech (who has been a little disappointing themselves), the Eagles haven't really played anyone worth mentioning. Don't get me wrong, BC is a good football team. But with Miami, Florida State, Clemson and Virginia Tech looming in the distance, they may not end up with a good enough record to make a bowl game.

6. Kentucky - The Wildcats have literally come from left field in 2007. Were they even on the radar in preseason? UK is having a dream season at the moment, beating two very good football teams in Louisville and Arkansas. But, look at who they have left to play - LSU, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Again, like BC, the Wildcats are a good team. But it is unlikely that they will stay in the top 25 for long.

7. Arizona State - Yes, the Sun Devils are 5-0. Yes, the Sun Devils beat a good Colorado team. But are they a top 25 team? NO!!! The facts are pretty straight forward. They play Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Washington and USC during the second half of the season. There are few teams, if any, who could withstand that kind week in and week out battering.

8. Kansas State - Contender. While Kansas State has only proven their mettle in one game this season (41-21 win vs Texas), they don't have that tough of a schedule in the upcoming weeks. If they can past Colorado, it will be smooth sailing until they meet Nebraska and Missouri. The Cornhuskers and Tigers are both tough teams, but I have a feeling that Kansas State will prove to be tough themselves.

9. Missouri - Let's face it. The Tigers are a good team. But are they top 25 material? In the past maybe, but not this year. They will not be good enough to get past Nebraska or Oklahoma. Then, to have any kind of noteworthy record, the Tigers would have to get past Texas A&M, Kansas State and Colorade - all good teams. In my opinion, it is just not going to happen.

10. Cincinnati - Major Pretender. This is an easy one. While the Bearcats have been averaging over 46 points per game, they've done it against teams my high school could probably beat. They are not going to get past WVU, USF, Louisville or Rutgers. They may not even make a bowl game.

11. Purdue - This once great football team has been rather shabby in recent years. This year is no different. Like most other Top 25 Cinderellas, the Boilermakers have had an easy road thus far. But, can they keep it up against the Buckeyes? Not likely. Are they going to beat a Michigan team that is playing with a chip on its shoulder. Probably not. It is going to be a long season for Purdue, unless they come up with some huge performances.

When all is said and done, you have to give it to these teams for performing as well as they have this year. But, let's face it. Nature is going to run its course. It is going to be survival of the fittest and like always, the bigger, better teams are going to ruin the fairy tale. Prediction: Oregon and South Carolina will stay in the top 25 and Kansas State has a chance as well. But the rest of the lot will be no where to be seen at the end of the season.

I need to know what all of the Florida college football teams for a project that I am doing. Here are the ones that I know about:
Florida-Gators
Florida State-Seminoles
USF-Bulls
UCF-Knights
Miami-Hurricanes
Are these the only teams that Florida has for college football?

There are two others that no one has mentioned: The Florida A&M Rattlers (they're located in Tallahassee) and the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (they're located in Daytona Beach). These are predominately African American schools, also known as HBCUs or Historically Black Colleges and Universities, that play in the (Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) of the Football Championship Subdivision or FCS, which up until 2005 was known as Division 1-AA. Their annual football game is called the Florida Classic, which this year was won by FAMU 42-6.

There is a reason why the winner of the Super Bowl earns the Vince Lombardi Trophy as a symbol of excellence in the football world. Lombardi encouraged his Green Bay Packer players to pursue perfection so they might catch excellence.

As it turns out, Lombardi and his players caught a lot more than 5 National Football League titles and the first 2 Super Bowl titles. They developed a bond among themselves that lasted a lifetime for those who have passed on, and still survives for those who continue the memory of Lombardi's great leadership and their great work ethic.

Perhaps some years from now the New York Giants will experience that same kind of bond that comes with such a great triumph as their conquest of the New England Patriots and the NFL world this year.

There is no way the Giants could have lived and played through the last 5 weeks of their season without becoming "one" with a purpose bigger than the odds they faced.

New York started by traveling to Tampa Bay and defeating the NFL's second-ranked defense on the Buccaneers home turf. Then the Giants traveled to Dallas to upset the Cowboys on their home field, becoming the first team to defeat a No. 1 seed in the NFL playoffs.

New York then played through a wind chill factor of 23 degrees in Green Bay to turn back the Packers and win the National Football Conference championship, earning the right to play the Patriots in Super Bowl 42. After upsetting New England 17-14 they walked away with the Lombardi Trophy and became the first NFC wild-card team to do so.

Perhaps Vince Lombardi said it best: "If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?" Lombardi was a winner and now the Giants are too.

New England, which won Super Bowl 36, Super Bowl 38 and Super Bowl 39, will now be remembered as the team that was the first to go 18-0 and then lose in Super Bowl 42 to the Giants. Coach Bill Belichick's jaws were so wired after the defeat he barely uttered 10 words.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins remain the only undefeated NFL team in its 88-year history with their 17-0 record and Super Bowl 7 victory over the Washington Redskins, 14-7.

Embedded in the hard-drive of my mind 40 years from now (assuming I live to be 103) will be two memories:

1) Eli Manning, seemingly surrounded by Patriot rushers, breaking away like a magician from the grasp of an arm not strong enough to rip off his jersey, coming clear in desperation to heave an arcing pass down the field and a heretofore nobody named David Tyree leaping upward over rivals to catch the ball over his head, falling backward, and hanging on even though he was viciously hit in his arm on the way down by Patriot safety Rodney Harrison in an attempt to knock the ball free.

Tyree's 32-yard catch against all odds on 3rd-and-15 with 1:15 left on New York's game-winning drive has to be one of the greatest catches in the history of championship football at any level. Incredible is a weak description of just how good his catch and hold was. He will likely never have such a great moment if he plays another 15 years in the NFL.

Almost forgotten in all of this is just how close Manning was to being sacked and the Patriots going on to preserve their then 4-point lead and possible victory.

New England's great run to an 18-0 mark now becomes a lot less with their Super Bowl loss to the Giants. It is too bad for the Patriots; the Giants could not be happier.

2) Manning's 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Plaxico Burress in the corner of the end zone with 35 seconds left happened because 6-foot-5, 232-pound Plaxico Burress was left isolated one-on-one with 5-foot-9, 195-pound cornerback Ellis Hobbs. Hobbs was at least 2 steps behind Burress and in no position to even contest for the ball, which would probably have been useless anyway with Plaxico's tremendous leaping ability, kind of like 5-foot-9 me going one-on-one against Michael Jordan.

Do not blame Hobbs for the loss. Patriot quarterback Tom Brady, who had the snot beat out of him from taking hits all afternoon by the Giants' much faster defensive rushers, did his usual come-from-behind last minute drive to give New England back the lead, 14-10.

Even linebacker Teddy Bruschi, the heart of the Pats defense, had embraced fellow backer Junior Seau on the sideline after the Pats went ahead and prior to the fateful drive, acknowledging that Seau was about to earn his first, long-awaited Super Bowl ring. Somebody forgot to stop Eli Manning and the Giants during the last 2 minutes of the game.

Burress, who had predicted a Giant victory amid the laughs and derisive remarks of almost everyone, caught the winning TD pass. He is a Michigan State University product just like myself. I could not be happier for Plaxico. It pains me to acknowledge that Plaxico was born 11 years AFTER I graduated from MSU.

Last fall I made up my mind to cover college football in my blog and did not even attempt to cover or comment on the NFL. It has now proved to be an excellent decision. I cannot imagine following the New England Patriots all year, fawning over their perfect record run, and being so let down in the Super Bowl.

All hail to the Giants, well, at least until the first NFL kickoff next season, then it will be go Seattle Seahawks for me. What was the name of that almost perfect team? I seem to have already forgotten.

If Rodney Harrison was still on the Patriots, would he have hit Belichick in the knees in the locker room?

I sold my tickets to this game, but wish I would have gone!
I think I would still be down there.

Harrison looked like he was going to cry when they were talking to him after the game about the decision.

It'll probably be much like last year... lots of wide open receivers being missed because the QB has absolutely no idea what the hell is going on out there. Thompson has no QB skills what so ever. I really don't think Stoops should start him. He want be giving his team a chance to win if he does. They'll go 8-5.

But there is one bright spot for the up coming season for OU. A true freshman running back named DeMarco Murray. (6'0" 185lbs, 4.2 speed !!!) He'll be the number two back, and believe it or not he's just as good if not better than Peterson. I've never seen anybody that can do what he can do other than Adrian Peterson and Reggie Bush !!! He's a very very very rare talent, and after Peterson leaves to go to NFL after this season you want even be able to tell that he's gone. Murray is a future Heisman candidate himself... remember where you heard his name first people !!! I'm telling you right now !!! He's going to turn the college football world upside down !!!

What is in a football team's name? Throughout the NCAA football season, we constantly hear the names of various teams as we watch games, learn scores, and manage our college fantasy football squads. However, we rarely think about the origins of various schools' names. Here are some of the fascinating stories about some NCAA schools' names:

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

In the history of NCAA football, Alabama has become one of the most successful teams. However, have you ever wondered about the history of the team's name? Newspapers originally referred to the football name as "Crimson White." This alluded to the school colors. It later became the "Thin Red Line." However, in a 1907 game between Alabama and Auburn, the two teams battled in a sea of red mud. Thus, Alabama became the "Crimson Tide."

2. Penn State Nittany Lions

We are familiar with mountain Lions, but what is the significance of Penn State's "Nittany" Lions? It all began with a Penn State graduate named H.D. "Joe" Mason.

Mason became inspired after seeing a live Princeton tiger on its campus. A Penn State newspaper then sponsored Mason's quest to choose a mascot for Penn State. The school ultimately chose a lion, and it is most likely the first college to have a lion as its mascot. The "Nittany" refers to the school's location at the base of Mount Nittany. According to local Native American legend, Nittany (also Nita-Nee) was an American Indian princess.

3. Arkansas Razorbacks

Before they were the Razorbacks, Arkansas was the Cardinals. Students selected the mascot, due to the school's colors of cardinal and white. The name "Razorbacks" originated from a talk that the first paid Arkansas football coach, Hugo Bezdek, made to the students of Arkansas. Bezdek gave the talk after the school's seventh victory during the season. He observed that the team had played like a "wild band of Razorback Hogs." The rest, as they say, is history. Starting in 1910, Arkansas had a new mascot: The Razorbacks.

4. Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma has become renowned for its play on the gridiron. However, have you ever wondered what exactly a Sooner is? Prior to the U.S. government's opening of regions in the Indian Territory for settlement, Sooners were actually people who entered the lands illegally. "Sooners" first referred to settlers in 1889 who moved onto the Oklahoma Lands prior to 12:00 noon on April 22, 1889.

5. Tennessee Volunteers

We all know what volunteers are. However, to which volunteers does the name of the Tennessee Volunteers refer? During the early portion of the War of 1812, Tennessee earned the nickname, "The Volunteer State." President James Madison ordered General Andrew Jackson to enlist 1,500 volunteer soldiers from Tennessee. The troops were to battle Native Americans and the British, but they never fought during the war. General Andrew Jackson would later become the U.S. president.

Every fact we learn about NCAA football, can help us to appreciate it better. For instance learning the history of NCAA schools' names increases our appreciation for their games.

I don't pray to Jesus over a football game even though I like to watch it. I like to watch College over Pros because the outcomes can be un predictable. The Anaheim Angels clinched the American League West decisively in 2009, posting a record of 97-65. The second place Texas Rangers finished a full 10 games back at 87-75. The Angels were equally good on the road (48-33) and at home (49-32).

The stats for 2009 were solid, although not spectacular. The team ERA was 4.45, and batting was.285. The nucleus of that team is intact, although they lost designated hitter, Vladimir Guerrero, to Texas and pitcher John Lackey to Boston. However, off-season acquisitions of Joel Pineiro, who went 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA for the Cardinals, and hitter Hideki Matsui, should fill any gaps left by their departure.

Bobby Abreu, who batted.293 in 2009, has been granted a two-year extension, and Jered Weaver (who ended the year with a 3.75 ERA and 211 inning pitched), Reggie Willits, Howie Kendrick, Mike Napoli (a.272 hitter in 2009), and Fernando Rodney have all signed. Players who were not offered a contract and thus became free agents include Dustin Moseley, Matt Brown, and Jose Arredondo (who had surgery on his right elbow two days before going free agent). Darren Oliver, who gave the team 73 solid innings with a 2.71 ERA in 2009, has declared free agency, as have Kelvim Escobar (who had only 5 inning pitched in 2009), Chone Figgins (who hit.298 for 2009), and Robb Quinlan.

If the Angels can stay healthy, particularly in their starting rotation, they have a good chance of taking the AL West again in 2010. Their most serious competition will likely come from the Texas Rangers, who have been making some quiet off-season acquisitions to bolster their team. Unresolved issues regarding the sale of the Rangers, however, may prove a distraction to the team and make it easier for the Angels to repeat as division champions.

The Angels eliminated Boston from the 2009 playoffs, but ultimately fell to the Yankees. And while prospects for their division look good, with many giving them an edge over Texas while some are calling it a toss-up, the Angels taking the pennant in 2010 does not seem likely. The American League has teams that are stronger in all areas, and currently the Yankees seem the most likely to dominate in 2010.

In 2009, the Angels ranked second in stolen bases, but in every other category they were, at best, mid-pack. Overall, the team was solid enough to win the West and is probably good enough to repeat. But merely being a solid team is seldom enough to win pennants. The Angels have no "bankable" players, such as a Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera, relying instead on a nucleus of dependable, if not particularly explosive, players to get the job done.

The bullpen is questionable for 2010, causing significant damage to the team ERA during 2009. The starting rotation is a good one, without major weakness but also without a major star. It remains to be seen how much impact the loss of Lackey will have, and whether Pineiro can offset the effect.

As 2009 division champions, the fans will be expecting, perhaps demanding, a repeat. The increased pressure will likely not be felt by the seasoned veterans, but some of the younger players may have problems coping with it.

What if they put on a shirt 08 World Series Champs Red Sox. Don't you get irritated by that. Oh I forgot, what if they didn't win the pennant? What do you think she'l do with the shirt?

It's just silly to get overly confident about your team's accomplishments no matter how good they're looking. I'm a Red Sox fan and while I'd LOVE them to win the AL East, I'm not about to go buy some pre-made t-shirt advertising that. I'll wait until they actually do win the AL East (if they do) and then I'll wear my AL East champs t-shirt. Being arrogant and a show-off (usually) gets you know where.
