In the fourth grade, a boy named Willie McTavish moved from Scotland to Auburn California, which was my home town. Miss Arbortree, our teacher, appointed me to show him around the school grounds, and to make him fell at home. I don't know why I was selected, unless it was the plaid shirt I was wearing that day.

Willie was a very nice boy, but very curious, and with hundreds of questions asked in his thick Scottish brogue, I spent a lot of time stuttering and asking him to repeat the question. It became apparent shortly that he was in love - really in love - with American baseball. Whether he knew of it before he came to the states or not, I never found out. But love it he did, and the balance of my 4th grade year consisted of memorizing batting averages, ERA's, fielding percentages, and the like. Willie was relentless. He knew the figures not only of Joe DiMaggio and the other stars of the day, but also of the utility men whose names were hardly household words. Looking back, I believe I learned more math from Willie than from Miss Arbortree that year, as he required me to compute batting averages not on paper, but in my head (writing averaged is not very practical when you are whispering during music or social studies.)

And speaking of Joe DiMaggio, Willie and I got the chance of a lifetime to see him when the Yankees were on a barnstorming tour, and stopped for a game against the Sacramento Solons of the Tripe-A Pacific Coast League. Sacramento was just 30 miles from Auburn (I understand it is somewhat closer now, thanks to Interstate 80), and we finagled either his parents of mine, I don't remember which, to take us to the game.

It was a thrill to see not only Joltin' Joe in the flesh, but also all the other Yankees, such as Scooter Rizutto, Whitey Ford, Billy Martin, Johnny Mize, Yogi Berra, Hank Bauer, Gene Woodling, and all those names that struck terror into the hearts of the other teams.

The Yankees thumped the Solons real good, much to the delight of us locals. We loved our Solons, of course, but they were bush league compared to the mighty Yankees, with all the tradition of the Babe, the Iron Man, and all those immortals. The highlight of the game came in the 8th inning when Joe jolted one over the left-center field fence. We all went bananas, later immortalized by Paul Simon and his Mrs. Robinson, who would much later haunt our memories about the nature of our heroes.

After the game, Willie and I and a dozen other kids stood in the parking lot by the door we figured the Yankees would emerge from, and after 45 minutes of making our parents wait, we were rewarded by the sight of Yogi, Whitey, and then finally Joe as they exited the clubhouse toward the team bus. (Yes - they traveled by bus and train back in those days.) Virtually all of us kids crowded around Joe, paper and pen in waving hand, hoping for the treasured autograph of baseball's ruling king. Willie and I got ours rather quickly from a weary but friendly DiMaggio, fortunately, then looked around to see which of the other Yankees was still available for autograph signing. By then all the others were in the bus, and the door of the bus was guarded by a stern-looking man in an official looking uniform, so we decided it would be unwise to try to board the bus. There was one kid, however, who looked to be 18 or 19 years old, learning against the side of the bus, waiting for Joe to finish his autographs. We didn't know if he was the batboy or what, but we thought we might as well get his autograph too, so we did - on the same little scrap of paper the immortal Joe DiMaggio had just signed.

When I got home, after showing everyone in Auburn who would look, including show-and-tell at school, I pinned the little paper up on my bedroom wall, right next to a framed copy of Joyce Kilmer's poem entitled "Trees". "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree." Many nights as I lay in bed, I looked at that little slip of paper, and visualized myself in pinstripes, backhanding a fly ball off the center field wall, throwing a strike to the plate, and hitting homer after homer after glorious homer, surpassing the records of Joe, the Babe, and the Iron Man. Sometimes in my drowsy state the words of the poem right next to my treasured slip would mix in my mind with baseball dreams, and the poem would sometimes read "I think that I shall never see and outfielder as great as Shinn". Terrible and vain poetry, but I would often fall asleep with these daydreams turning into night dreams. But each new morning burst the bubble, and life went on.

That little slip of paper stayed faithfully on my bedroom wall year after year, turning yellow with age. Then one day when I was a freshman in high school - probably 3 or 4 years later, I looked carefully at the slip, and found the signatures of both Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle side by side on the same slip of paper! The kid leaning on the Yankee bus!

"I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree." Or a scrap of paper with two names on it, one of them previously unknown.

Unfortunately, when I was away at college, Mom took all my stuff off the wall and put it in a box. I have spent the rest of my adult life looking for that box, but in vain. I don't miss Kilmer's poem that much, but I sure do miss that little scrap of paper.

I think there are a couple of things that could work against him:

1) Attitude - He could be a real jerk to the press, and even his teammates weren't his biggest fans. I'm not saying this is a valid reason to keep him out, but the BBWAA don't always use the best judgment and often let outside influences play a role.

2) The voters may downgrade his numbers because of Bonds, believing that any decent hitter could up those numbers with Barry in the lineup.

Personally, I think he'll get in and I'd have no problem with that. And as much as I hate to admit it, I actually thought back in 1992 that the Jays made a good move trading him. I never thought he'd amount to more than an average player, which may explain why I'm not a scout.

I say David Robinson,because he was better inside socrer and shooter because of his glass shots,had better leader skills and better dunker.

Each had their strengths, but Robinson was the better overall player. Bill Walton has even said so himself during commentating for games, that Robinson was capable of things he wasn't. Robinson (like Wilt) was that rare combination of height and speed. There are quite a few NBA stories of players who broke loose on a fast break thinking they would be free for an uncontested dunk or lay-up only to be run-down by Robinson on the far end of the court for a block or sometimes a steal during the lay-up. There just aren't many 7 foot tall men who can do that. He was also a capable shooter and re-bounder of the same quality as Walton and many of the other great bigs. That is why he has earned his spot in the pantheon of the 50 greatest ever.

Tracy Lamar McGrady, Jr. (born May 24, 1979 in Bartow, Florida), nicknamed T-Mac, is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association. A seven-time All-Star, McGrady was ranked #75 on SLAM magazine's Top 75 NBA Players Of All Time in 2003. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic before being traded to the Rockets in 2004.

High school career
McGrady played all 5 positions in high school at Mt. Zion Christian Academy, and entered the NBA without attending college. He created national buzz after his performance in the Reebok ABCD Camp, to which the best high school players in the nation are invited annually. He was named high school Player of the Year by USA Today.

NBA career

Toronto Raptors (1997-2000)
Due in part to his strong showing at the ABCD camp, Tracy McGrady was selected ninth overall in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. Chicago Bulls GM Jerry Krause had arranged a draft-day trade to send Scottie Pippen to Toronto for the 9th overall pick, which he would have used to take McGrady. Krause decided not to make the deal when Michael Jordan threatened to retire if it was made.[citation needed]

McGrady often found himself in teammate and second cousin Vince Carter's shadow. While Carter was responsible for scoring, it was McGrady's job to be the team's defensive stopper and ball distributor. The duo of Carter and McGrady led the Raptors to their first playoff berth in the 2000 NBA Playoffs, but they were swept by the New York Knicks in 3 games. The two also participated in the 2000NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Orlando Magic (2000-2004)
The Toronto Raptors made a sign-and-trade deal which sent McGrady to the Orlando Magic in exchange for a first round draft pick in 2000. In the 2000–01 season, he won the NBA Most Improved Player Award and was selected as a starter in the All-Star Game. In the 2002–03 season, McGrady averaged 32.1 points per game and captured the NBA scoring title, becoming the youngest player to do so since the NBA/ABA merger. In the 2003–04 season, he once again captured the NBA scoring title, averaging 28 points per game, and set a career high with 62 points against the Washington Wizards on March 10, 2004. With this performance, he became the fourth player in the past 12 years to score over 60 points in a game. Despite McGrady's personal accolades, the Magic had failed to reach the second round in the playoffs, and in his fourth season as a Magic, problems with team chemistry, coaching, and management forced Orlando into a downward spiral. The season ended with Orlando failing to reach the playoffs and an impatient McGrady seeking a possible trade.

Houston Rockets (2004-current)
On June 29, 2004, McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue, and Reece Gaines were traded to the Houston Rockets in a seven-player deal that sent Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Kelvin Cato to the Magic. In his first year in Houston, McGrady teamed with 7'6" center Yao Ming, to end the season ranked 5th in the Western Conference. On December 9, 2004, he scored 13 points in the last 35 seconds of a game against the San Antonio Spurs, with four consecutive 3 pointers (one of which was part of a four point play), including the game winning 3 pointer with 1.7 seconds left in the game. This helped the Rockets win 81-80.

Despite McGrady's play in the 1st round of the 2005 NBA Playoffs, Houston was eliminated in game seven by 40 points.

In the early 2005–06 season, McGrady missed eight games because of multiple back spasms. His back problems resurfaced on January 8, 2006 when he had to be taken out at halftime in a game against the Denver Nuggets on a stretcher to hospital because of severe back spasms. He had been out for five games. Since his return, the spasms have still been a problem for McGrady. In the 2005–06 season the Rockets were 2–15 in games he did not play in and 2–16 in games McGrady did not finish. While McGrady was injured for five games with his back injury, the Rockets did not win a single game. Other injuries include him falling on his tailbone in a game against the Indiana Pacers.

In the 2006-2007 NBA season, McGrady started out slowly, and after missing 7 games with back spasms he visited a doctor. In a recent interview with TNT, McGrady said that he thought that his body was slowing down. He believed that he could no longer be as explosive as he was in the past due to his back injury. Since Yao Ming was having another breakout season, he was deferring to Yao as the number one option.[1] However, since Yao went down with a leg injury, McGrady has stepped up his overall play, re-establishing himself as one of the game's premier players and by doing so has led Houston to the 5th best record in the league. Despite his recent shooting slump, he continues to find his teammates for the assist. He is currently averaging a career high in assists per game.

Their son was born December 27, 2005 during a 82-74 loss against the Utah Jazz in which McGrady left during halftime to see his girlfriend going into labor. The couple were married on September 12, 2006 in Mexico.[2] Tracy has stated that he and his teammate Yao Ming are close friends.[3] T-Mac and NBA superstar Vince Carter are second cousins. They played together in Toronto for two years, where McGrady often found himself playing in Carter's shadow.

McGrady is a seven time all star and has made the All NBA Team five times. McGrady is considered one of the most successful prep-to-pros players ever, following in the footsteps of Moses Malone, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant and Jermaine O'Neal. Like several other popular basketball players, he has followed the footsteps of Michael Jordan with his own signature shoe line with Adidas. However, a common criticism of McGrady is the fact that none of his teams have ever advanced past the first round of the playoffs in his NBA career.

While McGrady has often been compared to Kobe Bryant due in part to their similar statistics, McGrady's skill set and style of play sets him apart from other players. He is well known for his head fakes and his ability to create plays off of a screen. During the 2002-03 season, the NBA tried to promote many NBA all-stars and compare them with past greats; they compared McGrady to the silky play of the finger-roll master, George Gervin.[4]

McGrady visited Seoul (South Korea), Guangzhou (China), Manila (Philippines), and Hong Kong in Summer 2006, to promote his exclusive Asia T-Mac 1 shoe. Despite this international trip, he refused to play in the Olympics of 2004 due to security concerns. He also has recently expressed that the NBA should not stage its All-Star game in New Orleans, because he feels he will not be safe there.

So it looks like another weekend of heavy rain in Boston.

This is, what, the 7th or 8th weekend in a row with rain? I

love Boston, but this is ridiculous.

With the rain, my daydreams of San Diego, CA, seem to

keep popping up more and more (call it California

dreaming). The other night, I was listening to a great rock

station from Encinitas on Internet radio. It got me to thinking

about Encinitas, where my cousins used to live before they

moved up the coast to La Costa.

One of my favorite restaurants in Encinitas is the 101 Diner.

Located about 4 blocks from my favorite beach in the world

(Moonlight Beach), the 101 Diner has everything, from great

breakfast and lunch entrees to outdoor seating to a friendly,

all-around nice guy of an owner. Almost as good, and just

down the street, is Kim's Restaurant, which has terrific

Vietnamese food. Better yet, neither of these restaurants is

well-known (if you have looked at the site I founded,

Boston's Hidden Restaurants, you would know I have a

thing for great restaurants that haven't been discovered).

Heading south toward San Diego, another memorable, but

little-known, restaurant can be found in beautiful

Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Pipes Cafe is a breakfast spot that is

mainly frequented by surfers and Cardiff residents looking

to show up late to work (word is, Trevor Hoffman, the great

reliever for the San Diego Padres, is also a regular here).

Pipes has fantastic breakfast plates, and the dining

outdoors on the patio is a must.

As you continue down the coast, you come to artsy Solana

Beach, home to Fidel's, which is fairly well-known, and for

good reason; Fidel's may be the best Mexican restaurant

north of San Diego (though I have my personal favorite,

which I'll mention in a minute). Fidel's is tough to find, since

it's hidden in a neighborhood away from the ocean, but

worth seeking out.

Just before you reach San Diego, you hit La Jolla, a tony

community that seems to have more investment places

than restaurants. I like La Jolla, though, with its spectacular

downtown park above the ocean cliffs, and its narrow,

crooked lanes. Just south of the center of La Jolla is a little

restaurant called Bahia Don Bravo. The owners of this

authentic Mexican restaurant have a few branches in San

Diego, but this one is special, since you can order the food

to go and walk a few blocks down a side street to one of the

most spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean that you will

ever see. And there is even a bench where the view is, so

you can eat in relative comfort. Bahia Don Bravo has the type

of Mexican food that you just can't find in Boston. I always go

there when traveling to San Diego, and always miss it when

I'm back in Boston.

Finally, you reach the wonderful city of San Diego. Where to

go for food? Well, there are too many great places to

mention here. A couple of standouts are Point Loma

Seafood, with its memorable view of the city across the

harbor, and the Coyote Cafe in Old Town. But my favorite is

a little hamburger joint in Ocean Beach called Hodad's,

which is where I had the best cheeseburger I have had

anywhere in the country (and I've had a lot of

cheeseburgers!). Juicy, thick, hearty, and smothered in

cheese, the burgers here are impossibly good. Hodad's is

truly amazing.

Well, I guess my daydream of eating my way through San

Diego is about done. As I look out my window and see the

skyline of Boston, I realize that I do live in a great city. I just

wish it wouldn't rain so much.

Peyton Manning was born on March 24, 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana. At 6 foot 5 inches and weighing 230 pounds, Manning is one of the bigger quarterbacks in the NFL. From early on in life it was evident that Manning was going to be a great football player. His father, Archie, played quarterback in the NFL, and Peyton was destined to fall in his footsteps.

Manning attended Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans. He started at quarterback for three consecutive seasons, and during this time he racked up some of the best statistics that the state has ever seen. For his career Manning passed for 7,207 yards while leading his team to an overall record of 34-5.

After high school Manning decided to take his game to the University of Tennessee. When everything was said and done he ended up being one of the greatest college football players of all time. He led the school to a 39-6 record over four years by passing for 11,201 yards and 89 touchdowns.

With the first pick of the 1998 NFL Draft, Manning was selected by the Indianapolis Colts. In something that is uncommon in today's day and age, Manning has started every game of his NFL career. This is saying a lot as a quarterback in the NFL.

Manning started his career on the right foot by passing for more than 3,700 yards and 26 touchdowns as a rookie. He set many NFL rookie records, and has continued his record setting ways since then.

During the 2006 season Manning led the Colts to a 12-4 regular season record, and an eventual win in the Super Bowl. This win solidified him as one of the top quarterbacks in the game.

With many years left to play it is safe to say that Manning will continue to put up big stats, and lead his team to victory after victory. When everything is said and done there is a good chance that Manning will finish his career as the best quarterback that the NFL has ever seen.
