There is a reason why the winner of the Super Bowl earns the Vince Lombardi Trophy as a symbol of excellence in the football world. Lombardi encouraged his Green Bay Packer players to pursue perfection so they might catch excellence.

As it turns out, Lombardi and his players caught a lot more than 5 National Football League titles and the first 2 Super Bowl titles. They developed a bond among themselves that lasted a lifetime for those who have passed on, and still survives for those who continue the memory of Lombardi's great leadership and their great work ethic.

Perhaps some years from now the New York Giants will experience that same kind of bond that comes with such a great triumph as their conquest of the New England Patriots and the NFL world this year.

There is no way the Giants could have lived and played through the last 5 weeks of their season without becoming "one" with a purpose bigger than the odds they faced.

New York started by traveling to Tampa Bay and defeating the NFL's second-ranked defense on the Buccaneers home turf. Then the Giants traveled to Dallas to upset the Cowboys on their home field, becoming the first team to defeat a No. 1 seed in the NFL playoffs.

New York then played through a wind chill factor of 23 degrees in Green Bay to turn back the Packers and win the National Football Conference championship, earning the right to play the Patriots in Super Bowl 42. After upsetting New England 17-14 they walked away with the Lombardi Trophy and became the first NFC wild-card team to do so.

Perhaps Vince Lombardi said it best: "If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?" Lombardi was a winner and now the Giants are too.

New England, which won Super Bowl 36, Super Bowl 38 and Super Bowl 39, will now be remembered as the team that was the first to go 18-0 and then lose in Super Bowl 42 to the Giants. Coach Bill Belichick's jaws were so wired after the defeat he barely uttered 10 words.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins remain the only undefeated NFL team in its 88-year history with their 17-0 record and Super Bowl 7 victory over the Washington Redskins, 14-7.

Embedded in the hard-drive of my mind 40 years from now (assuming I live to be 103) will be two memories:

1) Eli Manning, seemingly surrounded by Patriot rushers, breaking away like a magician from the grasp of an arm not strong enough to rip off his jersey, coming clear in desperation to heave an arcing pass down the field and a heretofore nobody named David Tyree leaping upward over rivals to catch the ball over his head, falling backward, and hanging on even though he was viciously hit in his arm on the way down by Patriot safety Rodney Harrison in an attempt to knock the ball free.

Tyree's 32-yard catch against all odds on 3rd-and-15 with 1:15 left on New York's game-winning drive has to be one of the greatest catches in the history of championship football at any level. Incredible is a weak description of just how good his catch and hold was. He will likely never have such a great moment if he plays another 15 years in the NFL.

Almost forgotten in all of this is just how close Manning was to being sacked and the Patriots going on to preserve their then 4-point lead and possible victory.

New England's great run to an 18-0 mark now becomes a lot less with their Super Bowl loss to the Giants. It is too bad for the Patriots; the Giants could not be happier.

2) Manning's 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Plaxico Burress in the corner of the end zone with 35 seconds left happened because 6-foot-5, 232-pound Plaxico Burress was left isolated one-on-one with 5-foot-9, 195-pound cornerback Ellis Hobbs. Hobbs was at least 2 steps behind Burress and in no position to even contest for the ball, which would probably have been useless anyway with Plaxico's tremendous leaping ability, kind of like 5-foot-9 me going one-on-one against Michael Jordan.

Do not blame Hobbs for the loss. Patriot quarterback Tom Brady, who had the snot beat out of him from taking hits all afternoon by the Giants' much faster defensive rushers, did his usual come-from-behind last minute drive to give New England back the lead, 14-10.

Even linebacker Teddy Bruschi, the heart of the Pats defense, had embraced fellow backer Junior Seau on the sideline after the Pats went ahead and prior to the fateful drive, acknowledging that Seau was about to earn his first, long-awaited Super Bowl ring. Somebody forgot to stop Eli Manning and the Giants during the last 2 minutes of the game.

Burress, who had predicted a Giant victory amid the laughs and derisive remarks of almost everyone, caught the winning TD pass. He is a Michigan State University product just like myself. I could not be happier for Plaxico. It pains me to acknowledge that Plaxico was born 11 years AFTER I graduated from MSU.

Last fall I made up my mind to cover college football in my blog and did not even attempt to cover or comment on the NFL. It has now proved to be an excellent decision. I cannot imagine following the New England Patriots all year, fawning over their perfect record run, and being so let down in the Super Bowl.

All hail to the Giants, well, at least until the first NFL kickoff next season, then it will be go Seattle Seahawks for me. What was the name of that almost perfect team? I seem to have already forgotten.

Brooch Materials and Designs

A brooch can be made from just about any metal or material, but historically, precious metals like gold and silver are preferred. It's thought that early man improvised clothing fasteners from thorns or flint. Such brooches from relatively primitive cultures generally carried naturalistic themes that echoed their hunter-gatherer origins. In the modern era, purely decorative brooches evolved. A plain metal brooch is created by casting or hammering malleable metals. In the case of cast pieces, brooches often had ornate designs like filigree or Celtic scroll work. Decorating brooches with colourful enamels or gemstones (real or faux) is common.

There I was...excited to dine in a popular steakhouse with my wife. After all, this night was to celebrate her final day of coursework in her professional degree program. Although we eat out regularly, we especially were looking forward to dining on this night.

The food was good, waiter was good, service was good...in general, no problems. Afterwards, I told my wife that we won't be going back to that restaurant anytime soon. Why? Because "good" was not my expectation. If I wanted a "good" experience, I would've taken my wife somewhere else with "good" prices. In business, your price point says a lot about the promise you make to your current and future customers. In this case, the high prices (which I don't mind paying) suggests an exceptional, not "good" experience. As a customer, I am expecting the business to create a total service experience...which happens to be Principle #4 from the 7 Principles to Fully Engage Your Customers (which are listed below).

Here they are:

o Principle 1: Be eager to serve

o Principle 2: Be welcoming

o Principle 3: Create an inclusive atmosphere

o Principle 4: Create a total experience

o Principle 5: Turn customers into ambassadors

o Principle 6: Offer a gracious goodbye

o Principle 7: Earn your customers' confidence...reap the rewards

Principle #4: Create a total experience

Creating a total experience begins with having the right people in the right roles. It means that the greeter must be the person with the most welcoming personality on the team and have the biggest smile. It also means that every person the customer comes in contact with should not only like other people, but they should be happy and excited to be of service. That may sound trivial, but I've been in many businesses where the front line employee's demeanor is sending the message of "leave me alone...I don't want you here". Perhaps the biggest thing to remember about creating the total experience is that the experience is comprised of many touchpoints. Touchpoints may vary from answering the phone, to escorting a customer down the hallway; the point is that the overall experience is built on individual touchpoints. At the end of my service experience with your business, if you ask "Overall, how was your stay with us?", I will be responding to the overall experience.

Principle #5: Turn customers into ambassadors

Turning customers into ambassadors is about fostering loyalty. Successful businesses don't measure their success by the amount of new customers they get, they measure success by the amount of business they receive from their existing customers. This is sometimes referred to as organic growth. You want your business to be the first choice when existing and potential customers want to purchase a particular product or service. It doesn't matter if your business is selling rooms, food & beverage, ad space or even hospital beds. Your customers need to know that you look forward to serving them again in the future.

Principle #6: Offer a gracious goodbye

Offering a gracious goodbye is an extremely important principle, yet it can be very easy to bypass. Some service providers feel that after they have given the customer what they paid for, then service is done. Not so. Everything has a beginning and an end. Service is no exception. The purpose of the gracious goodbye is to thank the customer for their patronage. The customer did not have to patronize your business. Every customer should be reassured that their decision to spend their money with you was greatly appreciated. In fact, one best practice is to inquire if there is anything else you can do for your customer. And this is after you have provided the customer with what they came to purchase in the first place; no matter how small the request. After serving my coffee, ask "is there anything else I can do for you?" or some variation of it. The point is that your customers should feel like your job's main purpose is to not just meet, but exceed their expectations.

Principle #7: Earn your customers' confidence...reap the rewards

The rewards here are not just repeat business and referrals. Rewards are knowing that you have made a positive impact on someone's day. You should be confident that the service that you and your team provided made a difference in how that customer views your industry. You are not just doing a job, you are representing your team, your company, and your industry. Like any relationship, earning your customer's confidence is about building trust, and trust is built on doing what you say you will do every time. When I pick up the phone, browse your website, or visit your facilities, I should feel confident that the service will be one of two ways: Just as good as the last time I visited or better than the last time I visited. That is how trust is built.

So commit to fully engaging every customer you have. Use your team huddles and department meetings to engage your team in a meaningful dialogue about the importance of engagement. As customers become more savvy shoppers, simply competing based on fancy equipment or "bells and whistles" won't suffice. Today's customers want to feel like you value and appreciate their patronage, or they will simply go somewhere else.

Let 2008 be the year where exceptional service is not just a buzzword or flavor of the month. Commit to not settling for "good" or acceptable service delivery from your team and yourself. Only exceptional service will do. Fully engaging your customers requires dedication, commitment, and action. Follow the 7 principles, and your customers will always follow you.

Life as a Little League or Pony League catcher can be tough. You can read baseball tips on this, baseball tips on that, do drill for this and train for that. Listen to this person, listen to that person. Try this and try that.

But still, you find yourself not throwing many people out in games. It seems like there are always balls getting by you and going back to the backstop. You may have gotten whacked way more times than you'd like by wild pitches. Long games and hot games. Is catching really worth it?

Well, fear not young catchers! Here are a few baseball tips and advice for you on why you should hang in there if you really like catching.

Right now at your age in Little League or Pony League there are things going on that you really have no control over. This makes catching seem impossible at times. It can be discouraging to young catchers because at this age and in these leagues success doesn't come often. You're not throwing a lot of people out, balls are flying everywhere (and hitting you) and you many times feel like you're the catcher only because no one else is stupid enough to do it. Well, those things may be true right now, but here are some things to consider:

• In Little League and Pony League the bases are pretty short. When someone takes off, you're relying on a good pitch from the pitcher, a perfect throw from you and a perfect catch and tag from the second baseman or shortstop. These things don't happen routinely in Little League and are just getting better in Pony League.
• Kids are bigger, stronger and faster these days. Look at the Little League World Series this year. They moved the fence back a good distance because the home runs keep increasing and there are just too many. (yes, those high tech bats played a role too!) My point is, the bases are short and there are a lot of fast runners. This is not a good combination for throwing runners out.
• Many young pitchers at these ages throw a lot of balls and wild pitches. You need good pitches to have any chance at all of throwing someone out. Wild pitches and runners advancing easily can be discouraging You can catch, but you can't pitch and catch. So you are at the mercy of the pitcher too.
• Young pitchers don't always know how to hold runners well or perform good pick-off moves to keep runners honest. Watch a Pony League game sometime. Smart runners will be more than half way down to second base by the time the catcher gets the ball. There's nothing you can do here. Just do your best.

So if you are a young catcher and get a little bit discouraged from time to time, remember these baseball tips and keep your head up.

You can't control the pitched ball. It's going to go where it's going to go. What you need to do is become very, very good at blocking the ball. So what if you don't pop up and throw the runner out. That time will come. Just focus on becoming a technically good blocking catcher. This will always make you stand out from other catchers and this becomes even more true as you get older.

Throwing runners out? If it happens, great! But, what you want to do is develop fast, correct footwork instead of worrying too much about how many people you throw out. Learn correct footwork and practice it over and over and develop a technically correct delivery to second base. Wait and see what happens once the bases become 90 feet apart. You'll be amazed.

Work on other things like:

• Handling bunts, or choppers in front of the plate
• Footwork to block home plate on throws from the outfield. Again, the Little League World Series had great plays at home this year.
• Handling passed balls

Also, and very important, work on that thing sitting on top of your shoulders! Be confident, know that you are a good catcher and believe in yourself and your ability.

When those bases become 90 feet apart, the whole game changes for catchers. If you really worked on being technically good, fast feet and good delivery, you'll throw a lot of people out because now your pitchers and fielders are also much better.

Block everything. People will notice you for this. This will separate you from other catchers. This is true right into High School. Lazy catchers who won't block balls will sit at that point, regardless of their arm strength.

Consider these baseball tips that you've just read young catchers. Stick with it. It will pay off and catching will become a lot more fun once the bases are 90 feet. Just be ready and prepared with your skills when this time comes. And when it does, those same kids that might have thought you were stupid for catching years ago will look to you for the big play, the bases loaded block of a wild pitch, or the big throw that turns the game around. This is when you'll realize that it was all worth it...being a catcher. The BEST position to play!

Recently I was reading a list of inventors of important inventions that affect our lives every day. I glanced down the list quickly looking for the inventor I knew most about because he once lived in this area. To my astonishment he was not on the list, in fact, the item he invented was not on the list. This really surprised me because most everyone now days has at least one or two of these in their homes.

So let me introduce you to the inventor of TV, Philo T. Farnsworth. When Phil T. Farnsworth first talked about transmitting pictures through the air to a little box, the people in the small town of Rigby, Idaho probably thought he had lost his marbles. Well, time has proved that he didn't loose his marbles, but he did spread this idea all over the place.

With the introduction of TV into our world we were all just happy to have one of these magical boxers in our living room. No one thought they would ever be lucky enough to have two or event better yet, be able to take one where ever they went.

Phil T. Farnsworth got the key to the TV tube when he was 14 and a farm boy. By the age of 21 he had a working device. His parents wanted him to be a violinist, but he was more interested in experimenting with electricity. His mother's first electric washing machine was built by him.

He was born in a log cabin in 1906 in a small town in Utah. He rode his horse to school. When he was 15 he was living in the small town of Rigby, Idaho. At the age of 15 Farnsworth understood the Theory of Relativity probably better than his high school teacher who had tutored him in an audited senior chemistry class. This teacher would testify years later in a patent interference case.

Phil said that the idea of TV came to him on an Idaho potato field. As he tilled the plants behind a horse drawn harrow going back and forth and back and forth. You can just see his inventive mind working over time while he was doing this monotonous task. Realizing at length that an electron beam could scan images the same way. Row by row or line by line as if reading the book.

With only two years of high school complete he applied to Brigham Young University and was accepted despite his youth and the lack of a high school diploma. Here he researched television picture transmission. In 1926 at the ripe old age of 20 he co founded Crooker Research Laboratories, later to be renamed Farnsworth Television Inc in 1929.

In 1927 he transmitted a television image of 60 horizontal lines. He filed for his first television patent # 1,773,980 in the year 1927.

He continued to invent all of his life. One hundred sixty five different items he invented included amplifiers, vacuum tubes, electrical scanners, electron multipliers and photoelectric materials and equipment for converting an optical image into an electrical signal. He came a long was from that first electric washing machine for his mom to the magic box, called television, for the world.

Why do all the Mormons want to go to Brigham Young University?

Every Mormon kid at my school is planning on going there. They never explain why-they say "well, it's owned by my church" or something to that extent

I'm a "Mormon" who did NOT attend BYU. University of Wyoming and Duke University for me! Still, I understand why many LDS people want to attend.

First, BYU has developed into a pretty good school, and some of the colleges there are first-rate. My brother got an accounting degree there, and it opened to door to a top accounting firm and a great career.

Second, it's very inexpensive for a private school. If you're a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the tuition is even lower. Tithing contributions paid to the church are used to pay some of the costs, so members get a break on tuition.

Third, the school has and enforces a pretty strict honor code. If you want to go to college with people who live high standards, BYU is a good choice. You don't have to be a mormon to attend, but if you're not willing to live a moral life, you'd be happier somewhere else.

She had been sitting by the stream behind the cabin for an hour or so dwelling upon her life. She said a little prayer and got up to pack and go home. The weekend was over. She finished packing while he was on the phone and was ready to go when he finished. She drove him to the little airfield nearby. They chatted a bit on the way and he was gone back to his life. She was bothered by this episode in her life for a couple of weeks.

Of course she had told her Mother and folks at work, plus it was in the local paper on the front page. Finally she told her close friend at work. "Mary I am troubled and when I tell you why please don't laugh at me.

Before that man fell out of the sky practically in my lap I had just finished a prayer asking that I would meet a nice man." Mary looked stunned. Mary believed in signs and omens and of course she jumped all over this. "Betty, My God, he was sent to you from heaven!" Mary ranted on and on so that night she called her mother. Her Mother asked her Father and her Father asked the Minister. The Minister, called Mary.

It was every one's considered opinion that Mary get in touch with this man and just be up front and tell him the story. Betty thought, "Good grief, how embarrassing is that?" She called that little airfield and asked for Ron saying who she was so she could ask for his phone number. The man there said Ron was wondering how to find her. He was wanting to speak to her. Ron was expected this afternoon, so Betty gave her cell number. When he called he wanted to thank her by taking her to dinner if she was free to go. Mary waited until the third date to tell him about her prayer.

10. Zach Miller, Oakland Raiders. The young tight end broke out last season, with consistent yardage per game, having caught for 778 total yards. Unfortunately, he only scored 1 TD, and the Raiders' ability to score will heavily factor into his value this season.

9. Jeremy Shockey. A top-5 tight end not too long ago has slipped in the rankings, despite the fact that he plays for a top-3 fantasy quarterback in Drew Brees. Last season was a major letdown for Shockey and his owners, marred with injury (he missed 4 games), and Shockey amazingly scored no TDs. He also posted a career low 483 yards. Look for a bounceback season from Shockey, but the risk factor places Shockey at #9.

8. Chris Cooley. Another traditionally top-5 tight end, Cooley only found the end zone once last season. While he did post a career high in receiving yards (849), fantasy football is all about the touchdowns, and Cooley missed the boat there. He has easy top 5 potential with those yards should he score 5 or 6 TDs, but the Washington offense is questionable and others look more attractive given their QBs.

7. Owen Daniels. This young talent continues to improve each year, and has quietly emerged as one of the most reliable TEs in football over the past couple seasons. His 862 receiving yards were third best for a TE, but Daniels only scored two TDs. Still, his reliability combined with his upside will make most GMs happy, and Daniels falls at number 7 on the list this season.

6. Greg Olsen. A true sleeper this season in the sense that Olsen probably possesses more upside than any other tight end this season. With Jay Cutler at the helm, Olsen could easily have a breakout year at tight end, seeing as how involved Cutler traditionally likes to get with his tight ends. Olsen caught for 574 yards and scored 5 TDs last season, but should definitely best both of those numbers with Cutler's help.

5. Dallas Clark. When Peyton Manning is your quarterback, it's not hard to do great things. Clark has become an increasingly reliable option with each season, as Manning deals with an often double-teamed Reggie Wayne and an aging Marvin Harrison. Clark's 848 yards and 6 TDs are just too good to pass up, offering true value at the TE position.

4. Kellen Winslow. The 2007 season was a career year for Kellen Winslow, having caught for over 1100 yards and posting a career TD high as well. Last season, Winslow regressed (he only played 10 games) - partly due to injury and partly due to a murky QB situation in Cleveland. Winslow joins its Buccaneers team and should play a major role in its offense. He's a riskier play in the sense that there's both more risk and reward than there is with options like Dallas Clark. Draft accordingly.

3. Antonio Gates. Until last year, Gates was the consensus #1 fantasy tight end. Gates' 704 receiving yards last season (7th best for a tight end) have dethroned him, for now at least. In his defense, he did score 8 TDs, second best for any tight end. Numbers anyone would be happy to take.

2. Jason Witten. With the absence of Terrell Owens, there are many question marks in Dallas. As long as Romo's there, however, Witten should see plenty of targets. In fact, Romo may come to count on Witten even more, especially in the red zone. Witten began last season as the best tight end in football, but quickly slipped after a nagging rib injury slowed his season. He's rested and healthy, and should be back to posting regular WR numbers each weekend.

1. Tony Gonzalez. 2008 was a revival year for Gonzalez, who led all TEs in yards (1058) and TDs (10) last season, carrying many of his owners to the fantasy playoffs. Gonzalez finds himself as part of a stronger offense in Atlanta, and should connect with Matt Ryan for long receptions and TDs on many Sundays. Gonzalez is one of the most talented TEs in the game, and has only missed two games in his 12 year career. He hasn't received for less than 900 yards in a season since 2002-2003. Enjoy him for everything he's worth.

Should Ryan Miller Be The Starting Goaltender For Team USA...?

...in the Olympics?

An answer mentioned Miller being snubbed back in 2006 but if you remember that was because at the time of the selections Miller was injured with a broken thumb(Biron was playing phenomenally for the Sabres during that streak). He did come back before the Olympics but Team USA decided it was too late.

Possible Goaltending alternatives:
Jonathan Quick, Tim Thomas. Craig Anderson, Ty Conklin, Rick Dipietro, maybe Scott Clemmenson.

I don't think any of these goalies can push Miller off that starting spot. Why?:

Thomas: Off to a rough start this season, everyone must admit he won the Vezina last season, but the real question is; how much of an impact did Boston's defensive team have on his numbers? Wins: 4 GAA: 2.60 SV% .912 SO: 1. Still solid numbers even with Boston off to a slow start. With the experience factored in he will be a close backup to Miller.

Dipietro: Injured, might not be back, unproven if he can come back to his previous form, and regardless, not as good as Miller.

Anderson: Best chance at pushing Miller off, but Miller has the edge in NHL experience, this is Anderson's first year as a starter. He should make the team though in my opinion. Also note his numbers: Wins:10 GAA: 2.11 SV% .936 SO: 2. Definitely the most comparable to Miller's start.

Quick: Great start to the season. GAA 2.62 SV% .901 and 9 wins playing for a young L.A. squad, very solid. Still lacking experience.

Conklin: No. I have nothing else to say on him.

Bottom line, Miller has the perfect mix of experience, consistency, hot start to the season and overall ability to beat out any possible competition. He has shown over the past 3-4 seasons that he is a legitimate star goaltender.

I'm not a packers fan, but after what I saw Rodgers' performance against my boys last season, I knew he'd pick up right where Favre left off. So yeah, I'm not surprised to see the Packers are looking good this year. Good luck and my boys will see you in a couple of weeks.
