By now we of course all know about the MMA explosion that has swept through the country and around the world over the last few years. As this has happened, new MMA apparel and MMA merchandise companies have continued to spring up right and left, trying to compete with the likes of Tapout and Affliction.

The thing about Tapout apparel and Affliction merchandise is that both of these companies really know the sport and what it's all about. Neither one is just a company producing clothing, both are knee-deep in the culture of the sport and the lives of the fighters behind the scenes.

That means that the clothing you get from either of these MMA apparel companies really represents the true spirit of what mixed martial arts competition and training is all about. It's intense, it can be violent, it's physically demanding and it's a state of mind that says something about who you are.

You don't just "do" MMA fighting, you are an MMA fighter in and out of the ring. And whether you actually fight and train, or you're just a fan of these competitions, then you want to showcase all of that with MMA t-shirts and clothing that provide people a glimpse into that and let them know what you're all about.

Tapout merchandise has been around basically since the inception of the sport and the founders have played a large in the sport's development and growth, as they have supported fighters, grassroots organizations and more. Affliction is newer but no less authentic, and Affliction gear comes straight from the source as well.

That's not to say that all of the new companies are bad. Many of them provide high quality merchandise at great prices, such as the startup Intimidation Clothing which is beginning to make a name for itself. Even so, the best in the business remains the two big dogs, Affliction and Tapout.

Of course if you're a fan of boxing or other combat sports, you'll still find some great merchandise that you can rock from both Tapout and Affliction. After all, all of those traits mentioned above from intensity to mindset and physical demands are found elsewhere, and so you can train in and wear that kind of merchandise with pride.

If you're looking for a way to support MMA or boxing, show the world a bit about who you are or just find some great looking gear to wear, then you won't be disappointed with either Tapout or Affliction. Both of these companies are as real as it gets, and both represent the best in MMA apparel.

If you want the best in MMA merchandise and apparel, you have to turn to the biggest names. We'll help you find discounts and deals on all Affliction t-shirts and Tapout apparel so you can sport the latest in high quality MMA style.

1995 Oakland A's Pocket Schedule 1995 Oakland A's Pocket Schedule

The computer age has bestowed some unforeseen blessings on the sports world. Math whizzes are now using

the personal computer to track game results to a level never before possible, and sports are

the better for it. The book "Moneyball" chronicled the way Billy Beane, general manager of

the Oakland Athletics used obscure statistical analyses to scout and deal for talent. Now,

a variation of this method has spilt over into basketball with a number of NBA teams using

statistics in a similar manner. These methods were described in a recent Sports Illustrated

article titled "Measure of Success." Described as simply as possible, these statisticians

track how well a team does when a player is on the floor, versus how well they do when they

aren't.

These measures disregard a player's contribution as represented by their scoring, rebounding and assists totals,

and simply asks, "Does the team do better or worse when this player is on the floor?" They also in many cases

contradict the conventional wisdom concerning the relative worth of certain players. Jason Collins, a

fifth-year center for the Nets of little renown gets ranked as the fourth best defensive center in the

league. Conversely, high-scoring Michael Redd of the Milwaukee Bucks is

such a disaster on defense that his teams tend to lose with him on the floor, and win while he is on the bench.

While amateur coaches are sure to find these analyses interesting, is there any way in which they

can employ these metrics for their own use? Amateur coaches might be able to get team assistants

to gather the data needed to maintain these stats, but there is a much better way these concepts

can be applied.

Virtually all teams rely heavily on scrimmage play as part of their practice routine. By adopting

what I call a Roster Round Robin format during scrimmage play, coaches can get a much clearer

picture of how and when individual players perform better than others. The format simply requires

that sides be set to 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5, depending on available players. Players are issued

reversible jerseys, and score is kept for each side. Stages are set to 3 or 4 minutes, and at

the end of each stage, a team score is recorded, with each player earning points for themselves

on the basis of their team result. Two players are then directed to exchange sides by flipping

their reversible jersey, and a new stage is played. This pattern is continued until all possible

roster combinations have been used.

For a 3v3 contest, this would equate to 10 possible combinations, thus requiring a 30 to 40 minute

game. Each player earns a plus/minus score across all stages. As everyone plays under all roster

combinations and points can only be earned on the basis of team results, an individual's result

reflects their team contribution across all stages. In order to maintain game continuity and

ensure rapid roster rotations, the roster rotations are predetermined and printed on a grid used

for scoring.

Some may notice that the one thing seemingly not taken into account in this format is position

play. A roster rotation schedule that disregards position play will likely result in some oddly

balanced sides - think 5 guards versus 5 forwards and centers - that wouldn't reflect anything

resembling a real-game matchup. This difficulty can, however, be overcome by taking positions

into account when devising the roster rotations. For a 4v4 game, with players restricted to

either a center/forward or guard position, there would be 9 different roster combinations required.

For a full-sided game, a center position could be added, but 18 stages would be required.

With three minute stages, this would be a 54 minute scrimmage game. Coaches may wish to split

this size of scrimmage across multiple practices.

Would the results from any particular scrimmage mean much? For one game, probably not, as we all

know the ball can bounce funny for a time. But if this format were used on a regular basis, the

results should reveal which players are contributing the most to their team. These results will

either confirm or deny a coach's sense of who his best players are, but there are two even bigger

benefits that can come from the use of this format. First, as players come to understand this

as the new measure of their play, they will be more receptive to a coach's instruction on team

play. As well, players will intuitively respond to the demands of the game, and adjust their play

accordingly. Simply put, the ability to measure team play translates to a better ability to teach

and learn it.

The second benefit may be even more important. A system that clearly and demonstrably measures

a player on the basis of their team contribution fosters team chemistry better than any other.

The talented offensive player who lets down on defense can be brought to the table when the impact

of his lackluster defense can be shown. Players who are frustrated because they think they

should be playing more can either makes their case in the round robin practice, or be shown

they're not there yet. Regardless of the case, team chemistry is advanced.

The only real barriers to this practice format are logistical. Running this practice format

requires pre-numbered reversible jerseys, and scoring/rotation grid sheets.

Both are available at Rejersey.com.

The format can also be adapted for tryouts and tournaments. If your team or league would like to use this format and would like help with logistics and obtaining reversible jerseys please contact customerservice@rejersey.com.

Hike and the Aeroplane was the first novel written by Sinclair Lewis. Published in 1912, only 1,000 copies were printed. This novel was published under the pseudonym Tom Graham, because it was a "pot boiler" novel, which was a term for a poorly and quickly written novel just to pay bills, or out of necessity.

This story is of 16 year-old Gerald "Hike" Griffin and his chubby but good natured side kick, Torrington "Poodle" Darby, as they help an inventor named Martin Priest land a million dollar contract with the U.S. Army Signal Corps to purchase his "amazing tetrahedral flying machine." (Remember, this was published only 9 years after the Wright Brothers flight).

With the help of Lieutenant Jack Adeler they contend with evil Captain Willoughby Welch. In the process of the plot, the two boys make the greatest flight in the history of aviation. Prophetically, Hike foresaw the day when his plane, "Hike's Hustle," would fight a battleship.

Even the name "Hike," which is a nickname, reflects a different time that makes an interesting dating of the book, since "hike" was a football term. Westerners especially, would yell "Hike, hike, hike!" during a long football run.

The novel isn't a great work, and is definitely a beginning jumping off point for the author. There are a few themes on pacifism by the end, but otherwise there are few actual themes worth noting. This was written by Sinclair Lewis, though passed under the pen name of Tom Graham.

This is a very rare book, and while some guides have the price aroud $2,000-$3,000, the market place right now says a true first edition is worth well over $10,000. If you find one with a dust jacket (as far as anyone knows, there may only be 25 of these or less left) then it doubles, though every surviving copy is thought to be known.

Baseball is America's sport. It brings out the boys of summer. While it has had its ups and downs, it has never left us. It is part of the American family, like a brother that sometimes is the hero, sometimes the villain, often embraced, sometimes annoying but never ever turned away. Our children take baseball instruction and baseball hitting drills. We are devoted. Throughout baseballs short history there have been many memorable moments. Here is a quick accounting of a few of those moments brought to you by the heavy hitters.

It was February 2 in 1876, when eight teams became founding members of the National Baseball league. The first National League game was officially played on April 1st, 1876. Boston played Philadelphia and won. On February 2, 1900 the American league was born. It was made up of six teams including: Boston, Baltimore, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Chicago. In April of 1923 Babe Ruth hits his first home run. It was the first home run in Yankee Stadium. Eight years later on August 21st of 1931 Babe Ruth hits his 600th home run.

On May 15th, 1941 the amazing hitting streak of Joe DiMaggio begins. He would hit in 56 consecutive games. In September of that same year Ted Williams would finish the season with a batting average of .406, making him the only batter to ever hit over .400 for a season. In 1961 Roger Maris sends 61 balls over the fence giving him the record for most home runs in a season. Mark McGwire hits 62 in 1998. Sammy Sosa hits his 61st and 62nd home run five days later on September 13, 1998. Barry Bonds will break the record with 73 home runs in 2001.

In 1974, on April 8th, Hank Aaron smacks the ball out of the park and hits his 715th home run, bettering Babe Ruth and moving into the front position on the list of career home runs. He will have 755 before he lays down his bat in 1976. A year latter, Sadaharu Oh sends a ball out of the park in Japan. It is his 756th home run. On October 8th, 1977 Reggie Jackson, Mr. October, hits three home runs. He hits them on three consecutive pitches and leads the Yankees to their 21st world series championship.

On September 11th 1985, Mr. Hustle, Pete Rose hits his 4,192 hit beating out Ty Cobb. Four year later he would be banned from baseball for his gambling offenses. He finished his career with 4,256 hits. These are all players that knew how to swing a bat. There are many other famous players that were great at the plate and in the field. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Lou Gehris, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Duke Snider, Roberto Clemente and many more brought excitement to the game of Baseball. While the 50's and 60'a may have been the golden years of baseball, it is still dear to America's heart. Basketball, football and NASCAR may have grabbed some of the spotlight, but nothing will ever touch these great moments in baseball history.

Connor R. Sullivan ordered copies of DVDs focusing on baseball hitting drills to help some of the junior the kids on his baseball team. He believes that the baseball instruction will really help improve their game.

who was the Yankees greatest center fielder?

Joe DiMaggio
Mickey Mantle
Bernie Williams

Mickey Mantle. He could real shag 'em. And there was no better switch hitter in history. Joe Dimaggio was Ted William's pick for best all round ballplayer, but the Mick simply passed him up. Bernie Williams is one of the most outstanding people who ever played the game, but not the best player.

Gifts for newborn babies are treasured by new parents around the world. Most often, gifts for newborns are given at a baby shower and then again at the baby's Christening or other religious rite.

Most gifts include items such as baby clothes, baby furniture, and money for an education fund.

Here are some more baby gifts that are unusual and interesting:

1) Shoulder Sling. This handy shoulder sling made of strong cotton cloth holds the baby securely against a person's chest. The sling is comfortable for both the baby and the sling wearer.

2) Wristwatch Baby Monitor. This wristwatch is a receiver that receives the slightest baby sound from a transmitter situated near the baby. This monitor runs on a battery that recharges while it continues to monitor. The wristwatch monitor can be worn on the wrist or belt while you work around the house.

3) Neoprene Baby Bib. The beauty of this bib is that it can be wiped clean after each use. There is even a pocket along the bottom of the bib to catch food.

4) The "Boppy" Baby Pillow. This is an all-around form-fitting pillow which the baby lies on while sleeping, feeding, or resting in your arms. It fits any size infant.

5) Musical Mobile. Having a mobile over the crib provides interest for the baby and helps him or her focus on objects. Mobiles can be made up of butterflies, fish, birds, or characters from fairy tales. Some give off a tinkling sound in the breeze while others have music that can be turned on or off.

6) Car Seat. A baby's car seat with a harness and safeguard is a highly desired gift for a newborn baby. Most babies spend a lot of time in the back seat of a car and need to be kept safe while they ride.

7) Changing Table. Every new baby needs a changing table. The changing table is structured so that the baby cannot roll off. The changing table is light-weight enough to be moved from place to place. The shelves on the bottom are for storage.

8) Storage Tote. A storage tote is a roomy canvas bag for the nursery. It is meant to hold books, CDs, baby powder, diapers, toys, or baby bottles. Storage totes are an alternative to storage boxes. They have the advantage of being light-weight and easy to move around.

9) Baby cup. A silver or silver-plated baby cup engraved with the baby's initials is a desirable gift. People keep their baby cup for their entire life.

10) Baby Name Scroll. This is a name painting showing the baby's first name, its meaning, history, and famous people with the same name. The background is a painting, with a golden crown, crests, and seals. It is a collectible and is ready for framing.

The above baby gifts are enough to brighten any new parent's day. Most are on the unusual side and will make a hit at a party. With all the gifts to choose from, you will surely enjoy the experience of finding the perfect gifts for newborn babies in your life.

Benedict Manovill creates gift scrolls for you. A leading name historian and calligrapher, his works are in collections around the world. Order your personalized gift scroll and receive a free treasured gift. For more information, visit http://www.giftscrolls4u.com

The Outlaw Josey Wales is an interesting Western that I have watched many times. It is full of success lessons for the discerning!

A Missouri farmer joins a Confederate guerilla unit to avenge the murder of his wife and son and winds up on the run from the Union soldiers who killed his family.

Throughout the film, Josey spits chewing tobacco juice on everything that moves or does not move like the dead bodies of his enemies. He hits insects, dogs and a snake oil salesman who claims that his product can do 'almost anything'. Josey tells him to use it to clean the tobacco juice off his white jacket.

He also uses spit as a distraction before shooting down his foes. Occasionally he spits accurately into a spittoon. Practice makes you competent! Daily practice makes you an expert.

Pursued by the Union redlegs and his former Confederate leader, Josey Wales heads out for Red Indian country to escape capture.

His opponents chase him across a big river on a ferry raft. Josey stays cool enough to take a nap as his pursuers begin to cross the river. He then stays calm enough to shoot through the rope that is pulling the raft laden with horses and men. He gives them a 'Missouri boat ride' as they are swept away downstream.

This incident provides another great success lesson which is to stay calm under pressure. Everyone thinks, shoots and does everything better when they do not panic.

The young guerilla colleague, Jamie, whom Josey rescued from the redlegs, was wounded and is dying. Josey looks after him telling him not to look at the wound:

"Don't look at it, boy."

Great advice. Don't brood over your problem. Be aware of it but then get enthusiastic about how you will feel when your problem is solved.

Soon after the river escape, two bounty hunters, Abe and Elijah, sneak up on Josey. Both are excited at the thought of the reward for capturing Josey Wales but Elijah (Lije) is also full of doubts and warnings. Elijah reminds me of Shakespeare's great lines in Measure for Measure:

"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we

oft might win, by fearing to attempt."

Abe has to keep telling Lije to shut up so that he can concentrate on capturing Josey and getting the reward money. We all need to concentrate without allowing doubts to take over our minds. However in this case Lije is the wise one and Abe loses his life and Lije's by not listening to his warnings.

In the film, Abe pulls his gun on Josey: "I've got him, Lije."

"It's him, Abe. It's him! We've got the Josey Wales, Abe! I've seen him ride side by side with Bloody Bill, Abe. We've got reward money coming. Watch it, Abe. He's mean as a rattler and twice as fast with them pistols."

Abe tells Josey to "Move on back; move on back!"

Lije comes up with more warnings: "Watch him, Abe! I've seen him do some things..."

"Shut up, Lije"

Abe explains why he isn't killing Josey immediately:

"Now, Mr Josey Wales.I'd just as soon shoot you now but it'd be harder to drag your body through the brush to where we can get a pound price for you. "

Lije wisely disagrees: "Shoot him now, Abe. Shoot him, now!"

"Shut up, Lije." Abe is trying hard to concentrate on Josey!

"Move your left hand down and unbuckle that pistol belt. Make it nice and slow so that I can count the hairs on that hand. See, Lije. You pull his teeth and he's harmless as a heel hound. Always wanted to face out one of these big pistol fighters they raise all the fuss about."

Abe is on a roll! Lije is still rightly concerned:

"Watch out! He's probably got another pistol."

"Shut up, Lije."

Josey's young dying friend distracts the bounty hunters with the possibility that there might be stolen gold under his blanket and both of the bounty hunters are soon shot. Lije was right Josey does, in fact, have an extra pistol in a shoulder holster!

Jamie wants to bury them but Josey is as practical and unsentimental as ever:

"Buzzards got to eat; same as worms."

Later in the film there is another example of successful self-defence. Josey is confronted by some Union Soldiers. He again uses the distract them first technique by asking them a question to engage their minds before he shoots them:

"Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?"

I won't go any further in the film in case you haven't seen it but already there are some great success lessons in the story so far:

1) If you want to become a successful expert at something (even spitting) practice daily!

2) If you can stay cool under pressure and control the adrenaline surge that usually accompanies stress and danger you are more likely to deal with any problem (like pursuing soldiers) successfully.

3) Don't brood over a problem. Just take note of it and then imagine how you might feel if the problem had been successfully solved.

4) If you need to focus on a difficult task, it usually helps to avoid doubt and to shut up any distracting voices like Lije's. However, occasionally, it is wiser to listen to the distracting or sceptical voices!

5) Defend yourself successfully by distracting your opponent before you strike!

Torn Ticket Stub http://halyeah.com/torn-ticket-stub/ http://halyeah.com/torn-ticket-stub/#comments Sat, 20 Feb 2010 10:38:13 +0000 HalYeah http://halyeah.com/torn-ticket-stub/ Is working at the Angelika Film Center worth it for a college graduate?

I recently graduated college in May, and the economy is pretty bad to the point where I can't even find a job that requires a degree. A month ago, I applied for some retail jobs, as well as the Angelika Film Center. It is an arthouse theatre, and the manager e-mailed me back yesterday to schedule for an interview. While any job at this point is fine, I think about how similar it is to a movie theatre--sweeping, tearing off ticket stubs, working concession--and being a college graduate, I think it's kind of pathetic to have to work a teenager's job, but at the same time, it sounds like a good experience to work at an arthouse theatre.

I'm really having a hard time finding jobs that require a degree, so what should I do? Should I accept the job and get paid a measly $7.50, or keep my "dignity" and look for better jobs?

There is absolutely no loss of dignity in working at a theater. Honestly, just be glad you can get a job and pay your bills. Accept the job, but feel free to keep looking on the side.

Baseball injuries usually do not end a player's career. However, any injury can be a setback. With proper care and knowledge beforehand, the player will know what to look for, and will return to normal activities in a shorter amount of time.

The top seven baseball injuries that will plague most baseball players are described below.

1. Shoulder Injury

Throwing or hitting a baseball utilizes the entire physical body. A shoulder injury is normally associated with an arm and shoulder injury of the pitching or throwing arm and shoulder. In medical terminology, a baseball player's common shoulder injury is a torn Rotator Cuff. Pitchers are most prone to suffer from this injury, but anyone who plays baseball can become afflicted with a shoulder injury.

2. Sprained Wrist

A sprained wrist injury demands special attention so that the swelling and pain can subside. A sprained wrist injury rarely lasts for more than a few days since the wrist is so flexible and pliable. Should a player take a tumble or have to chase a fast dropping line drive hit, he could easily suffer from a sprained wrist.

Sometimes when a player is running for a base, he'll slide into the base and sprain his wrist. It hurts and it will swell, but most likely, the wrist will not get broken. Within a few days after cold compresses have been applied, and the wrist is later soaked in warm water, the wrist will be fine, and the baseball player will be ready to participate in his next game.

3. Dislocated or Broken Fingers

When a baseball player's glove webbing is improperly aligned at the moment when a ball impacts the glove, the player's fingers and hands will sting. However, most players will tell you that catching a ball with an ungloved hand can feel like being shot with a high-powered arrow.

Whenever a finger is exposed at any angle other than in an open and flexed state, the player will feel his finger joints getting crunched, dislocated, or broken. Catchers and infielders are the most common players to receive such finger injuries, but it can happen to any player, regardless of the position they're playing.

4. Hyper-extended Knee

When a baseball player grabs a fly ball out of the air, he is most certainly prone to suffering from a hyper-extended knee injury.

Whenever a player's foot lands awkwardly after he has lunged for a fly ball, the knee joint takes the bulk of the landing. Although he may show the other players that he can walk off the immediate hurt, his knee joint will be sore for days.

When that same player pays attention to his knee's soreness, he will recover quickly. However, if the player aggravates the injury by playing several more innings, or another game within a day or two, the injury will worsen and the pain will reappear.

Another way that a player can hyper-extend his knee is when his spikes get jammed into a base that's fixed into place. The knee joint could twist in the wrong direction, thereby causing the knee to hyper extend.

5. Pulled Hamstring

Even the most in-shape and toned baseball player who appears to have strong muscled legs can be prone to suffering from a pulled hamstring when he's running at break-neck speed to catch a ball or run a base.

Mickey Mantle's entire career and Albert Pujols's existing career have been fraught with hamstring muscle pull problem injuries. The injuries are painful, and the player will most likely need to take some time off to heal, but his career will not be ended due to a pulled hamstring.

6. Sore Elbow

Whenever a baseball player throws a ball hard to one of his teammates, he becomes susceptible to a sore elbow injury the same day or the next day. Sore elbows heal fairly rapidly, so there's no need for medical attention, except to remember to reduce the velocity that a player throws the ball the next time he's out on the field. A sore elbow is caused when the player suddenly stops or slows down the fling. That action is known to cause stress at the elbow's bone joint.

7. Bruises on Legs and Hips

When a baseball player does not wear sliding pads, he is quite vulnerable to receiving big bruises and strawberries on his legs and hips from sliding into a base. The painful part comes when a well-meaning attendant tries to apply any medication that contains alcohol or witch hazel in it. You'll be sure to hear the player's screams from many fields away.

Bruises will change colors and are certainly sensitive to the touch, but they're not the most serious injury a player can receive. So, try to remain tough when you look in the mirror after the game and see raw fleshy spots. Within four or five days, the tenderness will be gone, and most likely the color of the bruise will have faded away.

There I was...excited to dine in a popular steakhouse with my wife. After all, this night was to celebrate her final day of coursework in her professional degree program. Although we eat out regularly, we especially were looking forward to dining on this night.

The food was good, waiter was good, service was good...in general, no problems. Afterwards, I told my wife that we won't be going back to that restaurant anytime soon. Why? Because "good" was not my expectation. If I wanted a "good" experience, I would've taken my wife somewhere else with "good" prices. In business, your price point says a lot about the promise you make to your current and future customers. In this case, the high prices (which I don't mind paying) suggests an exceptional, not "good" experience. As a customer, I am expecting the business to create a total service experience...which happens to be Principle #4 from the 7 Principles to Fully Engage Your Customers (which are listed below).

Here they are:

o Principle 1: Be eager to serve

o Principle 2: Be welcoming

o Principle 3: Create an inclusive atmosphere

o Principle 4: Create a total experience

o Principle 5: Turn customers into ambassadors

o Principle 6: Offer a gracious goodbye

o Principle 7: Earn your customers' confidence...reap the rewards

Principle #4: Create a total experience

Creating a total experience begins with having the right people in the right roles. It means that the greeter must be the person with the most welcoming personality on the team and have the biggest smile. It also means that every person the customer comes in contact with should not only like other people, but they should be happy and excited to be of service. That may sound trivial, but I've been in many businesses where the front line employee's demeanor is sending the message of "leave me alone...I don't want you here". Perhaps the biggest thing to remember about creating the total experience is that the experience is comprised of many touchpoints. Touchpoints may vary from answering the phone, to escorting a customer down the hallway; the point is that the overall experience is built on individual touchpoints. At the end of my service experience with your business, if you ask "Overall, how was your stay with us?", I will be responding to the overall experience.

Principle #5: Turn customers into ambassadors

Turning customers into ambassadors is about fostering loyalty. Successful businesses don't measure their success by the amount of new customers they get, they measure success by the amount of business they receive from their existing customers. This is sometimes referred to as organic growth. You want your business to be the first choice when existing and potential customers want to purchase a particular product or service. It doesn't matter if your business is selling rooms, food & beverage, ad space or even hospital beds. Your customers need to know that you look forward to serving them again in the future.

Principle #6: Offer a gracious goodbye

Offering a gracious goodbye is an extremely important principle, yet it can be very easy to bypass. Some service providers feel that after they have given the customer what they paid for, then service is done. Not so. Everything has a beginning and an end. Service is no exception. The purpose of the gracious goodbye is to thank the customer for their patronage. The customer did not have to patronize your business. Every customer should be reassured that their decision to spend their money with you was greatly appreciated. In fact, one best practice is to inquire if there is anything else you can do for your customer. And this is after you have provided the customer with what they came to purchase in the first place; no matter how small the request. After serving my coffee, ask "is there anything else I can do for you?" or some variation of it. The point is that your customers should feel like your job's main purpose is to not just meet, but exceed their expectations.

Principle #7: Earn your customers' confidence...reap the rewards

The rewards here are not just repeat business and referrals. Rewards are knowing that you have made a positive impact on someone's day. You should be confident that the service that you and your team provided made a difference in how that customer views your industry. You are not just doing a job, you are representing your team, your company, and your industry. Like any relationship, earning your customer's confidence is about building trust, and trust is built on doing what you say you will do every time. When I pick up the phone, browse your website, or visit your facilities, I should feel confident that the service will be one of two ways: Just as good as the last time I visited or better than the last time I visited. That is how trust is built.

So commit to fully engaging every customer you have. Use your team huddles and department meetings to engage your team in a meaningful dialogue about the importance of engagement. As customers become more savvy shoppers, simply competing based on fancy equipment or "bells and whistles" won't suffice. Today's customers want to feel like you value and appreciate their patronage, or they will simply go somewhere else.

Let 2008 be the year where exceptional service is not just a buzzword or flavor of the month. Commit to not settling for "good" or acceptable service delivery from your team and yourself. Only exceptional service will do. Fully engaging your customers requires dedication, commitment, and action. Follow the 7 principles, and your customers will always follow you.
